Chievo boss Beppe Pillon will be hoping that his side can maintain their early momentum when Ascoli visit the Stadio Bentegodi. In his maiden Serie A season, Pillon has instilled a work ethic and a belief in his Chievo side that has seen them defy the critics to sit proudly in fifth position.
The excellent performances of Chievo’s 18-year-old striker Victor Obinna, alongside Brazilian Amauri, have added firepower to a side built on a solid defence orchestrated by veteran goalkeeper Alberto Fontana. The Flying Donkeys’ tactician, however, has refused to be carried away by early successes and has brushed aside talk of UEFA Cup qualification, stressing that he is aiming only for survival.
There can be no doubt that Ascoli Coach Marco Giampaolo has the same objective. Despite an encouraging start to the season, the visitors are still looking for their first away win and have struggled to find the form that they showed in beating Sampdoria in Week 7. The Week 11 defeat at the hands of Fiorentina was the third in a row for Giampaolo’s side and he must fear that the Serie A honeymoon period is over.
Pillon has the luxury of a full-strength squad with the exception of Federico Cossato, suspended after a red card against Siena, and long-term absentee Matteo Brighi who is approaching fitness.
Ascoli welcome Nicolas Cordova and ex-Chievo man Alfredo Cariello back from injury, but will have to do without Domenico Cristiano, Mirko Cudini, Valerio Virga and Andrea Parola. Giampaolo also faces a striker shortage with Corrado Colombo and Pasquale Foggia out of action.

Fiorentina - Milan

Milan travel to the Stadio Artemio Franchi looking for their ninth consecutive League win, but they will have to stop in-form Fiorentina striker Luca Toni in the process. Milan, two points behind leaders Juventus, will approach the match with no shortage of confidence having defeated the front-runners in Week 10 and mauled Udinese 5-1 in Week 11.
Fiorentina will prove a serious test for Ancelotti’s men. The Viola have won their last four games, beating Ascoli 2-0 in Week 11, and in Toni possess the most prolific striker in Europe. Toni, allegedly a target for Bayern Munich, scored for the Azzurri against Holland last weekend and Milan will have to be at their best to stop the giant marksman adding to his staggering tally of 13 Serie A goals this season.
The hosts have a painful history against Milan. It was at the hands of the Rossoneri that Fiorentina suffered their record home defeat in 1992, losing 7-3. The Viola fared little better last season and will be eager to avenge their 6-0 and 2-1 defeats.
After a fairytale start to the season, the next three weeks will be a true test of Fiorentina’s progress as Cesare Prandelli’s men must face Milan, Roma and Juventus. The Fiorentina Coach will be able to call on a strong side for the challenge. Guilherme Do Prado, Christian Maggio and Alessandro Gamberini are still sidelined, but Marco Donadel returns from suspension to face his former club and there are no new injuries.
Carlo Ancelotti receives a boost with the news that Andriy Shevchenko is available for his first game since the Week 8 clash with Palermo. He will most likely link up with Alberto Gilardino who will be looking to put one over his ex-boss at Parma. Only Cafu is unavailable after international duty. Given the embarrassment of striking riches, Christian Vieri may find himself in the stands once more.

Roberto Mancini’s men approach Inter’s San Siro clash with Parma fully aware that a repeat of last season’s 2-2 draw would be unacceptable. After disappointing draws against Sampdoria and Lazio, the pressure is on the hosts to record a victory against a struggling Parma side.
Following shrewd summer investment, expectation amongst Inter fans was sky high. As yet however, the Nerazzurri have only shown glimpses of their true ability and cannot afford to lose further ground on Juventus and Milan. Without a win in three games, inconsistency could cost under-pressure Inter boss Mancini dear.
Adriano has vowed to rediscover his deadly touch in front of goal. He returns from playing in Brazil’s 8-0 demolition of the UAE as does goalkeeper Julio Cesar. Mancini will hope that the break has allowed the troubled striker to clear his head.
Mario Beretta’s Parma side have only won twice this season, but will be looking to build on Week 11’s much-needed 2-0 victory over Lecce. After weeks of intense Press speculation linking Erneste Valvelde with the Parma hot-seat, club President Lorenzo Sanz has given Beretta his full support. Although Parma are poised precariously above the relegation zone, Beretta will hope that this new stability will transmit to his side and has insisted that he can ensure survival.
Juan Sebastian Veron returns from his suspension for a head butt on Francesco Totti and only Jose Zé Maria is unavailable to Roberto Mancini. Parma’s injury crisis is beginning to ease off with Paolo Cannavaro, Jorge Bolano and Ferdinand Coly all returning to fitness. Andrea Pisanu, Daniele Bonera and Daniele Dessena remain out of contention. Beretta will have to decide whether to opt for Marco Delvecchio again after surprisingly benching Bernando Corradi for the win over Lecce.

Lecce - Siena

Lecce could not have hoped for a better time to play Siena. The Tuscan outfit are in risk of seeing their great early season form wiped out by a combination of bad luck and poor concentration. They have won just one of their last five games and conceded nine goals in the process.
Even the prolific Enrico Chiesa has found it hard going recently which has seen his side score just once in their last three matches. This is partly due to Tomas Locatelli being missing because of injury. Without his creativity, the Bianconeri can struggle to create chances and his continued absence will be music to the opposition defenders’ ears.
Although Siena have not played well in their recent matches, Lecce will still be looking at their opponents with envy on Sunday. The southern outfit have lost all of their last five games without even scoring a goal. But however badly the team as a whole needs a goal, their start striker Mirko Vucinic needs one more. Amazingly the player who had 19 to his name last term is yet to find the back of the net and only boss Silvio Baldini can be feeling more pressure than the Serbian striker.
Lecce will take some hope from the fact that as well as Locatelli, Francesco Colonnese is also still out injured. A host of other players are missing as Jonathan Bachini and Igor Tudor are both sidelined, while Nicola Legrottaglie and Gianluca Falsini are suspended. The Giallorossi are only without long-term absentees Guillermo Giacomazzi and Rodney Babù.

Livorno - Empoli

Livorno and Empoli will both be trying to keep it simple in this tightly matched Tuscan derby. Azzurri boss Mario Somma has told his players not to get overconfident following their 3-0 thrashing of Reggina and must be concerned by star player Francesco Tavano’s claims that he is dreaming of a move to Inter.
They may be sitting high in the League, but Somma will need to make sure his team is concentrating on their game against a hard-working Amaranto side. They may have the advantage in experience though as ‘keeper Gianluca Berti has played a host of Tuscan derbies in his long Empoli career and Christian Riganò was no stranger to such occasions in his time at local rivals Fiorentina. The Azzurri will welcome back Francesco Pratali and Ighli Vannucchi after their injuries, but are still without defenders Stefano Lucchini and Nicola Ascoli.
Empoli will also take confidence from Livorno’s habit of losing their head in the big matches. They fell to Juventus 3-0 in their last match and received a 5-0 mauling from Inter at the San Siro.
The Azzurri will be hoping that the derby atmosphere will produce another example of their self-destructive tendencies. But the hosts will see this as a perfect opportunity to bounce back from their Juve defeat. Losing to a side that has won 10 of their 11 matches so far will not have damaged their confidence too much and they will definitely see themselves as favourites against their newly promoted Tuscan rivals. Striker Raffaele Palladino is still injured for Livorno and is now joined by Giuseppe Colucci. Diego De Ascentis is suspended after his red card against Juventus.

Reggina - Cagliari

Reggina and Cagliari will be desperate for a good result from the clash at the Stadio Granillo. They are both becoming heavily involved in the early stages of the relegation battle and the Rossoblu recently appointed their fourth Coach of the season in an attempt to get their team back to winning ways.
The current campaign has been nothing short of a disaster for Cagliari and they are still looking for their first win. To make matters worse, they have lost every match so far outside of their Sardinian home. They will take some hope from their performances in their previous meetings with fellow relegation battlers as draws with Messina and Treviso have started to steady the ship.
Reggina have not had so much luck when meeting other teams from the lower regions of the League. They did record a win over Lecce but since then a defeat to lowly Treviso and a 3-0 mauling from Empoli in their last match have done serious damage to their survival hopes. Boss Walter Mazzarri will be hoping for a return to the form that saw them beat both Lazio and Udinese this season. Those performances almost moved them clear of the relegation dogfight before they were dragged back in by Serie A new-boys Treviso and Empoli.
Reggina’s injury crisis continues despite the return of Giacomo Tedesco. Ivan Pelizzoli, Ilyas Zeytulayev, Rolando Bianchi, Simone Cavalli, Simone Missiroli and Maurizio Lauro are all missing through injury. Cagliari have ‘keeper Fabian Carini available again meaning that Joe Bizera is their only injury victim. Michele Canini has returned from his suspension after seeing red against Fiorentina, but Daniele Conti’s punishment was more severe so he still has two games to run on his ban. Antonio Langella will also be suspended for this match.

Roma - Juventus

It is always a heated encounter when Roma play Juventus and this match is set to be no exception as both sides have already declared verbal warfare on the other. Francesco Totti announced his dislike of former teammate Emerson and ex-Roma Coach Fabio Capello claiming that they "are not real men" for leaving the Giallorossi and then Lilian Thuram countered with a subtle dig at the opposition’s tendency to lose their head. This war of words has continued to escalate through repeated counter-attacks meaning that both teams will be going all out when they finally meet at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday evening.
With former Roma heroes like Emerson and Capello – who both won Lo Scudetto in the capital - in their ranks, the Bianconeri were always going to relish the chance to put one over on Roma, but this time the feeling will be more than mutual. The Giallorossi will surely see Juve as at least partly responsible for the Antonio Cassano fiasco due to their constant rumour stirring during the summer. After the problems that situation has caused they must see nothing as being more desirable than getting the win which could see La Vecchia Signora knocked off the top of the table for the first time this season.
They may once again have to do this without outcast Cassano, but their only other absentee is Christian Chivu as he is still suspended after being sent-off against Ascoli. Juve are shy of long-term injury victims Gianluigi Buffon, Alessandro Birindelli, Jonathan Zebina and Ruben Olivera. To add to their problems, the in-form Adrian Mutu will also have to watch this match from the treatment room.

Sampdoria - Lazio

Sampdoria and Lazio are both lurking at the edge of the leading pack and this match could decide which one pounces to make a real push for Champions League qualification. With second and third placed Milan and Fiorentina meeting in Florence, and Juventus facing a tricky game with Roma, this could be their best chance yet to catch up with the League leaders.
The Biancocelesti will need to see a big improvement though, as they have not won in their last four matches and have not won away from home at all this season. Although they have drawn with both Roma and Inter in that time, they will have to play better than they did when losing to lowly Reggina if they want to take anything away from this game.
Sampdoria have also suffered a dip in form recently culminating in a defeat at the hands of newly promoted Ascoli. All now appears to be fine again though after their victory over Palermo in their last match.
Coach Walter Novellino will just be hoping that his players haven’t forgotten that magic touch after the weeks rest due to international matches. The Blucerchiati have performed well in the big matches so far - as shown by the four points they have collected from the two Milan sides this season - and the Genovese outfit will be looking to start a similar record against the Rome teams in this encounter.
Lazio have a number of players missing despite the return of Matteo Sereni, Paolo Di Canio and Sebastiano Siviglia. Angelo Peruzzi, Andrea Giallombardo, Gaby Mudingayi, Felice Piccolo, Fabio Liverani and Fabio Firmani are all injured for this game. Sampdoria have Aimo Diana available again after his suspension, but Fabio Bazzani, Giulio Falcone and Marco Zamboni are all still out because of their injuries.

Treviso - Palermo

An upset could be on the cards when Treviso host Palermo at the Stadio Omobono Tenni. The Biancocelesti have seen a resurgence of late drawing with Cagliari and Chievo and even recording their first win of the season against Reggina. With Palermo struggling to continue their impressive early form, the North-East side will be hoping to shock Serie A by taking maximum points in Alberto Cavasin’s first game in charge.
A lot will depend on the success of their efforts to fit the Brazilian pairing of Pinga and Reginaldo into the same side. On their day these two can give Treviso the spark they desperately need, but so far they have misfired.
The 2-0 loss to Sampdoria in their last game has seriously dented Palermo’s European ambitions. They will be confident of overcoming Serie A newcomers Treviso, but their away form will still need to improve for this match. So far the Rosanero have won just once outside of Sicily and that will give real hope to their opponents in this encounter.
Palermo strikers Andrea Caracciolo and Stephen Makinwa will be looking to rectify the situation by taking advantage of Treviso’s defensive frailties. This will be made easier by the injuries key defenders Marco Mallus and William Viali have, while Paolo Dellafiore is suspended. Cavasin does have some good news though as he welcomes back Stefano Dall’Acqua and Jehad Muntasser. The Rosanero will be grateful to have ‘keeper Matteo Guardalben back after his lengthy absence but are still without Christian Terlizzi and Mario Santana.

Udinese - Messina

Udinese and Messina will both need a good result in this match if they want to keep the fans off their backs. Both Coaches also need to do well here but they are more concerned with saving their jobs than pleasing the fans at the moment. Bianconeri boss Serse Cosmi has asked his team to recreate the flowing attacking football they displayed on their way to Champions League qualification last season. Unfortunately these tactical decisions have come under heavy criticism following their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Milan. He will be hoping for a more rounded performance in front of the home fans, otherwise he could find himself following the growing number of Cagliari Coaches to the unemployment office.
Messina have been in constant crisis this season, but there have been brief signs of improvement recently. Week 10 gave them their first win of the season against fellow strugglers Lecce and five points from their last four games is definitely a step in the right direction. They also seem comfortable away from home, which could give them some added confidence in Udine. They have earned five of their total eight points away from Sicily this season and some more points here would be a big help in their fight against relegation.
Unfortunately Messina’s star striker Riccardo Zampagna still has one game to run on his ban after an incident with a referee against Ascoli. Ivica Iliev and Marco Zanchi both return from their suspensions but Alessandro Parisi and Zlatan Muslimovic are still injured. There are no new casualties for Udinese but Cesare Natali, Mirko Pieri and Jose Vidigal are all still recovering from their problems.
