Aston Villa could recall striker Juan Pablo Angel to start with Milan Baros.

Skipper and central defender Olof Mellberg and striker Kevin Phillips are still both sidelined with hamstring and ankle problems respectively.

Everton have doubts over midfielder Tim Cahill (calf) and striker Marcus Bent (hamstring), while James Beattie is struggling with a foot injury.

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe will have a late fitness test on the ankle injury he picked up against Middlesbrough last week.

Spurs will definitely be missing winger Andy Reid, who suffered a knee injury in the same game.

Birmingham striker Mikael Forssell is a fitness doubt because of a sore thigh.

But midfielder Muzzy Izzet and defender Mario Melchiot are both coming back from injuries, but are more likely to return against Manchester United.

Bolton are expected to bring striker El-Hadji Diouf back into the starting line-up in place of Hidetoshi Nakata.

West Brom have a full squad to choose from, with midfielder Zoltan Gera and defender Steve Watson available again.

Newcastle striker Michael Owen will make his first return to Liverpool, but the Magpies will be without suspended midfielder Scott Parker.

Portsmouth are without Salif Diao (hamstring) and Vincent Pericard (thigh), but Lomana LuaLua should be fit to play despite a hamstring injury.

West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker is expected to start in place of the injured Yossi Benayoun after recovering from a fractured ankle.

Wolves v Reading

Veteran midfielder Paul Ince is pushing for a recall ahead of Wolves' home clash with Reading.

The 38-year-old midfield enforcer spent four months on the sidelines recovering from a torn thigh muscle before proving his fitness in a 90-minute reserve-team outing in midweek.

Central defender Jody Craddock is back from a calf injury and Mark Davies has recovered from a hernia operation.

But the game could come too soon for George Ndah as the striker has yet to complete his recovery from a hamstring strain, while fellow forward Carl Cort is certain to miss out once more following knee surgery.

Jackie McNamara will also be absent thanks to cruciate knee ligament damage and goalkeeper Matt Murray remains short of match sharpness following an operation to repair his broken foot.

Gabor Gyepes, who is set to make his move to Molineux permanent once the transfer window re-opens, is just one yellow card away from incurring a one-game suspension.


Reading could be boosted by the return of Leroy Lita after he recovered from a long-term ankle injury.

Sheff Utd v Norwich

Norwich will be without skipper Andy Hughes for the clash with Sheffield United as he faces around six weeks on the sidelines.

Hughes has had a metal plate inserted in the fractured cheekbone he sustained in Saturday's home win over Southampton.

Leon McKenzie played for the reserves in midweek but did take a knock and is a doubt.

Jason Shackell has been suffering from a virus and is also rated doubtful as he did not feature in the midweek reserve game.

David Wright has returned to Wigan following a one-month loan spell at Carrow Road.


Striker Steve Kabba is expected to return for Sheffield United.

Kabba has not played since the Steel City derby win over Sheffield Wednesday, and has had to miss the last two games with a hamstring complaint.

But Warnock expects to be able to name him in the squad for the first game of the four-match Christmas schedule, as the Blades look to keep up their unbeaten home record this season.

The inclusion of the former Crystal Palace forward is expected to be the only change for United, as they have no injury or suspension worries.

Leeds v Coventry
Manager Micky Adams has plenty of injury problems to contend with for Coventry's trip to Leeds.

The Sky Blues will head to Yorkshire buoyed by their 1-0 win over QPR at Loftus Road where City recorded their first away win of the Championship campaign so far.

But Adams will be unable to call on defender Stuart Giddings as the left-back has undergone a second operation aimed at solving long-term knee problems.

And midfielder Stephen Hughes has been laid low by an Achilles tendon injury.

Also struggling are defenders Matt Heath and Marcus Hall, who have respective back and calf injuries, while Neil Wood has a knee problem too.

However, striker Stern John, who has made an early return to Coventry following a loan spell at Derby, could return to contention, with Adams saying: "At this time of the year, any player we get back into the squad is a valuable player."


Leeds welcome one player back from suspension but lose two more.

Gary Kelly returns after serving a one-game ban for being booked five times, but teenage defender Simon Walton and on-loan midfielder Liam Miller are both suspended.

Walton was sent off for two bookable offences against Wolves and Miller was booked for the fifth time.

Steve Stone is missing, with another operation on his Achilles casting doubt on whether he will ever play again.

Full-back Frazer Richardson misses out with a knee injury, while the game comes too soon for Iceland international midfielder Gylfi Einarsson (dislocated shoulder).

Striker Richard Cresswell, who is returning from injury himself, may play a part as fellow forward Rob Hulse awaits confirmation on whether he needs an operation on his hip.

Watford v Southampton

Watford manager Adrian Boothroyd aims to celebrate signing a new contract by guiding his side to victory over Southampton.

The Saints were believed to be interested in hiring Boothroyd as their new manager - but the 34-year-old opted instead to sign a four-and-a-half-year deal at Vicarage Road.

Boothroyd hopes to welcome back striker Darius Henderson for his first start since the 3-1 win over Wolves on October 29.

The 24-year-old has struggled with a hip injury all season, but his return on Boxing Day would be a huge relief to Boothroyd, whose key forward Ashley Young is out until the new year with an ankle injury.


Southampton head to Watford boosted by the return of captain Nigel Quashie.

Scotland international Quashie has sat out the last four matches through suspension, and he has also shaken off a back problem in time to make the trip.

Rory Delap is also available, having sat out the defeat at Norwich with a one-match ban, but striker Marian Pahars is unlikely to be fit.

Darren Kenton should continue in the centre of defence with Claus Lundekvam (ribs) and Michael Svensson (knee) still missing.

Preston v Sheff Wed

Sheffield Wednesday hope to have David Graham fit for their clash with Preston.

The Scottish striker had to go off against Ipswich with a thigh injury but he is back in training and could play. Lee Peacock (ankle) has missed training and there are doubts over whether he will be fit to play.

John-Paul McGovern (thigh), Steve MacLean (broken tibia) and Lee Bullen (hamstring) are all still unavailable. But Drisso Diallo has recovered from an injury and could feature.

Manager Paul Sturrock will be unable to call upon Daryl Murphy, after Sunderland cut his loan spell at Hillsborough short.


Preston manager Billy Davies should have striker Patrick Agyemang available.

The former Gillingham man made a surprise return to the North End squad, coming off the bench in the goalless draw with Sheffield United following hamstring trouble.


Davies will be without midfielder Paul McKenna and Callum Davidson after the pair picked up injuries.

McKenna will be out for up to four weeks after doctors reassessed leg damage suffered in the game against Derby at the start of December.

Attacking full-back Davidson is expected to be sidelined for around a week after only recently returning from a hamstring strain.


Goalkeeper Andy Lonergan (knee) remains a long-term absentee, while midfielder Eric Skora (knee) and Andy Smith (patella tendon) are also sidelined

Derby v Luton

Luton will be without influential skipper Kevin Nicholls for the trip to Derby.

The 26-year-old midfielder was booked for the fifth time this season in the 1-0 defeat by Southampton on December 11, and must serve a one-match ban.

Manager Mike Newell is likely to bring in Peter Holmes in central midfield in place of Nicholls, with Carlos Edwards, Ahmet Brkovic and Dean Morgan competing for two places on the wings.

Newell will also be hoping veteran keeper Marlon Beresford recovers from a back injury in time to replace the promising but inexperienced Dean Brill at Pride Park.

Luton have lost their last six Championship matches away from home - and have not scored on their travels since the 3-1 defeat at Crewe on October 15.


Derby manager Phil Brown is sweating on the fitness of full-back Marc Edworthy.

Edworthy has fallen victim to a knee injury but scans and other tests have so far been unable to establish the exact nature of the problem.

And with Southampton opting to recall striker Dexter Blackstock, Middlesbrough loanee Danny Graham could be set for his first Rams start after three substitute appearances.

Meanwhile, utility player Paul Boertien has all but completed his recovery from surgery to solve long-term knee problems.

Boertien has been sidelined since February, although the Boxing Day game is likely to come too soon for the 26-year-old.

Burnley v Stoke

Stoke will be boosted by the return of three key players for the clash with Burnley.

Top scorer Sambegou Bangoura and defenders John Halls and Marlon Broomes all missed the 3-2 win at Luton with bans but will be available for manager Johan Boskamp at Turf Moor.

On-loan winger Luke Chadwick, who had been struggling with a hernia problem as well as sickness, was withdrawn at half-time at Kenilworth Road but should feature.

Defender Clint Hill (knee) should return to training in January but midfielder John Eustace (knee) remains a long-term absentee.


Steve Cotterill's Burnley squad is largely injury-free as he heads into the festive period.

Winger Nathan Dyer has been recalled by Southampton but defender Wayne Thomas made his return from a serious knee injury as a substitute in the 4-1 win over Watford at the weekend.

Lee Grant has extended his loan spell from Derby for another month and fellow goalkeeper Danny Coyne, who will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, is Cotterill's sole absentee.

Brighton v QPR

On-loan defender Paul McShane is poised to go back into Brighton's starting line-up when they host QPR.

McShane returned to Manchester United fearing his season was over three weeks ago after damaging ankle ligaments, but the injury turned out to be far less serious than first feared and after a 45-minute midweek run-out for the reserves, he has declared himself fit.

Richard Carpenter, Mark McCammon and Albert Jarrett are also back from injuries, while teenage defender Gary Elphick returns from suspension.

Striker Leon Knight will be hoping for a recall after being left out of the squad altogether against Hull last time out.

Michel Kuipers and Florent Chaigneau will battle it out for the goalkeeper's jersey following Alan Blayney's return to Southampton.


QPR manager Ian Holloway will be forced to hand goalkeeper Jake Cole his full debut.

His first choice keeper Simon Royce is suspended for three matches - and as 20-year-old Cole is a registered professional, Holloway cannot use the "emergency" loan system to bring in a more experienced man.

But striker Paul Furlong is back from a ban, while fit-again duo Marc Bircham and Matthew Rose are in line to make their first starts since October 22 and August 26 respectively.

Utility-man Georges Santos is likely to miss the match after suffering a knock in the 1-0 home defeat by Coventry.

Crewe v Hull

Hull have been boosted after a trio of players shrugged off illness ahead of the trip to Crewe.

Keith Andrews, Curtis Woodhouse and Kevin Ellison all missed training earlier this week after a stomach bug.

But they have since returned to fitness, while Stuart Green is also available after having four stitches inserted in a cut above his eye.

Boss Peter Taylor has no other fresh injury concerns and is expected to choose from the same squad that lost 2-1 at Brighton.

Defender Roland Edge will miss the entire Christmas period with a groin strain.

Skipper Ian Ashbee, strikers Ben Burgess and Steve McPhee and defenders Alton Thelwell and Danny Coles all remain long-term injury absentees.


Crewe boss Dario Gradi has a major doubt over Michael Higdon.

The striker has been struggling with a torn stomach muscle and may miss out.

Defender Darren Moss could make the game after missing the 1-1 draw with Leicester due to a heavy knock he sustained against Norwich.

Eddie Johnson (foot) is likely to be in contention but fellow striker Juan Ugarte (knee) remains sidelined.

Ipswich v Palace

Crystal Palace will be without defender Emmerson Boyce for the trip to Ipswich.

The 26-year-old is banned for one match after being booked for the fifth time this season in the 2-0 defeat at Plymouth last weekend.

Defender Danny Butterfield is out until the new year with groin trouble, while Iain Dowie is tipped to recall wingers Marco Reich and Jobi McAnuff to the starting line-up.


Ipswich manager Joe Royle has been boosted by the return to fitness of experienced midfielder Kevin Horlock.

A persistent knee injury has kept Horlock out of the last two games, and Royle said: "He might have been able to play on, but we took the decision to rest him so that he would be available for the busy festive programme."

Town's injury woes have improved to the extent that top scorer Sam Parkin, who is likely to be sidelined until March because of a broken ankle, is their only definite absentee against the Eagles.

Royle has revealed he hopes to make at least two signings during the January transfer window.

Cardiff v Plymouth

Plymouth boss Tony Pulis will be forced to change a winning side for the trip to Cardiff.

Right-back Paul Connolly will miss the game after being booked for the fifth time this season in the impressive 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace.

That means Pulis will be forced to rejig his back four, in which Connolly has been an important element alongside on-loan West Ham centre-back Elliott Ward, pacy French ace Mat Doumbe - man of the match against Palace - and the ever-dependable Anthony Barness.

Former Bolton man Barness - who joined Argyle in the summer - can switch from left-back to the right, or there might be a recall for Hasney Aljofree who can play anywhere along the back four.


Cardiff manager Dave Jones will almost certainly name the same side which drew 0-0 at home with Derby.

And the manager admits he is fortunate to have the luxury of a full squad from which to select from ahead of the hectic festive programme.

"My squad is up to full pelt now going into the hard Christmas period," Jones said. "That's good to have. I'd be more worried if it was the other way round where I had suspensions and injuries.

"All the 18 players I have here I need to keep fit, and I need them to keep focused. And to their credit, they have been doing that.

"It's important that we stay sharp and bright over the next seven days because the games are then going to come thick and fast."

Leicester v Millwall

David Tuttle tackles his first match as Millwall manager without a number of key players.

Tuttle took over from Colin Lee, who has been made director of football, in a caretaker capacity this week and will be in charge of the Lions at Leicester.

Tuttle is keen to tie up an "emergency" loan deal for Birmingham goalkeeper Colin Doyle, who spent the last month at The Den but returned to St Andrews in midweek for Blues' Carling Cup tie against Manchester United.

Bottom-of-the-table Millwall need a keeper as Andy Marshall (knee) is out along with forwards Carlos Fangueiro (ankle), Barry Hayles (knee) and Carl Asaba (back) and defender Jamie Vincent (calf).

To make matters worse, defenders Matt Lawrence and Tony Craig miss the game through suspension.


A defensive reshuffle is on the cards for Leicester manager Craig Levein.

Levein will be unable to call on teenager Alan Sheehan, who starts a two-game ban imposed after he was sent off in only his fifth appearance for City against Crewe.

However, Paddy McCarthy is back in contention after serving a two-game suspension of his own.

James Wesolowski is back from a broken shin but the Millwall game could come too soon for the 18-year-old Australian, and Lee Morris has yet to regain full fitness after a knee cartilage operation.

Defender Nils-Eric Johansson should be available, though, after bouncing back from the illness which ruled him out of the clash with the Railwaymen.
