Hilario is expected to continue in goal for Chelsea for the Carling Cup third-round tie at Blackburn in the absence of Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini.

Cudicini has stepped up his training after recovering from concussion but Jose Mourinho is unlikely to rush him back into action at Ewood Park.

Joe Cole could start his first game of the season as Mourinho tries to rest some of his senior players for the first of three away games in seven days.

Mikel Jon Obi is available after serving his one-match ban for a red card at Reading.

Blackburn's Robbie Savage looks certain to miss the clash after he complained of a knee problem following the defeat by Bolton on Sunday.

David Bentley (hamstring) and Andre Ooijer (bruised ribs) are both doubtful for the match at Ewood Park.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez will be without Craig Bellamy (ankle), Fabio Aurelio (groin) and Mark Gonzalez (ankle) for the Carling Cup visit of Reading to Anfield on Wednesday.

Benitez will also rest Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypia and Xabi Alonso, with Steve Finnan also likely to sit the match out. England Under-19 goalkeeper David Martin, the son of West Ham legend Alvin, will be understudy to Jose Reina because of Jerzy Dudek's suspension.

Benitez has added three more youngsters to the squad, midfielder Danny Guthrie and full-backs Lee Peltier and Jamie Smith. Harry Kewell remains sidelined, but Robbie Fowler is fit after a back problem and will play.

Reading are set to welcome defender Sam Sodje back from knee surgery for the clash.

Winger Bobby Convey (knee) and skipper Graeme Murty (hamstring) remain on the sidelines with long-term absentees Dave Kitson and Peter Mate (both knee).

Defender Andre Bikey returns from suspension and youngsters James Henry, Pierre Joseph-Dubois, Alex Pearce, Jonathan Hayes and Curtis Osano join the squad as manager Steve Coppell looks to give fringe men run outs.

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce will be without the services of Abdoulaye Faye and Kevin Nolan for the Carling Cup third-round clash at Charlton.

Senegalese centre-back Faye has been ruled out after suffering a mild concussion during Sunday's win at Blackburn, while skipper Nolan serves the first of a three-match ban he was given for picking up a fifth booking at Ewood Park and then later being shown a straight red card for dissent.

That further depletes Allardyce's already thin squad, although striker Henrik Pedersen is expected to be back after recovering from surgery for an Achilles tendon injury.

Goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, who saved two penalties at Blackburn, may be rested ahead of Saturday's Barclays Premiership clash against Manchester United.

Charlton striker Darren Bent may miss out with a tight hamstring.

Midfielder Andy Reid is suffering from a similar injury and could also be rested for the Trotters clash at The Valley.

Amdy Faye (foot) are Dennis Rommedahl (foot) are doubts while Souleymane Diawara is unlikely to be risked as he is feeling stiff from Saturday's draw with Watford.

All five players will be given fitness tests tomorrow with Charlton boss Iain Dowie revealing he will field his strongest team for the tie.

Newcastle will hand a first start to their on-loan striker Giuseppe Rossi for Wednesday night's Carling Cup tie with Portsmouth at St James' Park.

The Manchester United striker has had four substitute appearances for Newcastle but is set to start against Pompey.

Celestine Babayaro is also in Newcastle's starting line-up following his three-match ban and groin injury but both Emre and Antoine Sibierski are out through injury.

Kieron Dyer is not involved but Newcastle hope to have him back for Saturday's Barclays Premiership game with Charlton.

Portsmouth are still without skipper Dejan Stefanovic (knee) and a thigh injury also threatens to rule out his fellow defender Glen Johnson.

Striker Lomana LuaLua has recovered from the virus which forced him to miss Saturday's match at Chelsea and looks set to link up with Newcastle old boy Andy Cole in attack, with Kanu and Benjani Mwaruwari rested.

Like Cole, defender Andy O'Brien may face his old club as manager Harry Redknapp ponders whether to rest veteran centre-backs Sol Campbell and Linvoy Primus. Dean Kiely stands by to take over in goal from David James.

Alan Smith will start his first game since recovering from horrific injuries sustained at Liverpool last season when Carling Cup holders Manchester United begin the defence of their trophy at Crewe.

With so many of his fringe players out on loan, Sir Alex Ferguson will field more first-teamers than usual for the opening round of the competition, including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Kieran Richardson and fit-again duo Gabriel Heinze and Mikael Silvestre.

However, Ferguson still intends to offer some of his promising reserve team players a taste of first-team action with Ryan Shawcross, Kieran Lee, David Gray and Aaron Burns all expected to be involved.

Crewe will definitely be without forward Rodney Jack.

Jack misses the game through illness, although on-loan duo Isaac Osbourne and Andy Taylor are both eligible for the game at Gresty Road.

Gary Roberts serves the second instalment of a three-match ban and the Alex are also without Billy Jones (hamstring), Darren Moss (hernia), Lee Matthews (knee) and Luke Rodgers (ankle).

Midfielder Lee Bell and Tony Grant - yet to play this term due to respective foot and Achilles problems - are not ready to return to action.

Assistant boss Neil Baker said: "We won't have to say a lot to them before the game and what we've tried to do is give them the best possible chance to pull of an upset.

"We'll be organised and hopefully we can do well against them."

Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov should be recalled to the squad for the Carling Cup match at MK Dons.

Berbatov was rested for the 1-0 Barclays Premiership win over West Ham on Sunday, but while he returns head coach Martin Jol remains without midfielders Teemu Tainio (hernia) and Steed Malbranque (groin).

Didier Zokora remains doubtful after missing the West Ham game with a mild case of malaria.

MK Dons manager Martin Allen has threatened to ring the changes ahead of the clash.

The Dons suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat to Hereford at the National Hockey Stadium on Saturday and Allen fears a repeat against the Premiership side - if they fail to improve.

Adolfo Baines, Ben Chorley, Nicky Rizzo, Joe Tillen, Joe Howe and Rob Webb have all been transfer listed and could be left out of the squad.

But club captain Keith Andrews is expected to continue after making his return from a knee problem in the defeat to Hereford.

Fellow knee injury victim Gary Smith is still some way from a return to action.

Allen told the club's official website: "Now we play Tottenham Hotspur. If we play like that and defend like that then there's no doubt it, we're going to get absolutely battered.

"I'm going to have to change some of the personnel, there's no doubt about that."

The Premiership champions may rest some senior players for the third-round tie at Blackburn but they will not field a team of reserves as Arsenal did at West Brom on Tuesday night.

Mourinho said: "The Carling Cup is important. It's not the Premiership or the Champions League or the FA Cup but it's a cup and a competition we respect.

"We won it two years ago and we want to repeat that if possible.

"If you ask me if I'd prefer to win the Premiership or the Carling Cup, I prefer the Premiership, but it's a competition we respect.
