Beckham stars in Real win

China XI 2-4 Real Madrid
David Beckham created goals for Ronaldo and Raul as a full-strength Real Madrid side beat a combined China and Hong Kong XI 4-2 in Hong Kong.

Happy Valley lived up to its name as the local fans were treated to some dazzling football by the tourists and a gutsy effort by their own team.

All the goals came in the first half, a penalty from Zinedine Zidane and a cool Ronaldo finish put Real in control early on before Wang Pen pulled a goal back for the hosts.

Beckham created another for Raul but the Hong Kong side replied again through Lee Yao before another Beckham assist allowed Ronaldo to complete the scoring.

The England captain has now played three and won three with his new club during the tour of Asia and he looked at ease in a star-studded Real midfield.

Beckham lined up on the right-hand-side of a midfield trio which also included Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo, while Claude Makelele played an anchor role behind them.

And with Raul and Ronaldo forming a deadly strike force, the hosts could have been forgiven for expecting a real hammering.

That feeling was compounded by two Madrid goals in the opening 13 minutes.

Zidane coolly slotted home from the penalty spot after Carlos had been sent crashing on six minutes.

And Ronaldo teased the Hong Kong defence with a series of stepovers before firing home in space to make it 2-0.

But, for all Madrid's fulsome attacking qualities, their Achilles' heel remains a wobbly defence.

That point was highlighted on 26 minutes as Chinese international Wang Peng headed powerfully home from a corner with Spanish keeper Iker Cassilas caught in no-man's-land.

The goal was the first Real had conceded on tour, but normal service was quickly resumed, with Beckham pulling the strings.

Zinedine Zidane tricks his way past Szeto Man-chun
His superbly-played 30-yard pass over the Hong Kong defence landed perfectly in the path of Raul, who ran on to gratefully fire home.

Soon after, a quick throw-in from Carlos sent Brazil team-mate Ronaldo clear in space and again the striker's finish was clinical.

But the home side had the final word.

Lee Yao cashed in on some more hapless Real defending, beating Salgado to the loose ball and lashing home after Helguera had failed to deal with a low cross into the box.

The second half descended into an exhibition of tricks and flicks by the tourists, punctuated by a series of game-numbing substitutions.

But Ronaldo - and second-half substitute Portillo - could both have helped themselves to hat-tricks.

Ronaldo saw one effort hit the crossbar and two more saved, while Portillo wasted a glorious late chance after exchanging passes with Morientes.

By then, Beckham had already been replaced after a quietly effective display - and the England captain will be delighted with the ease of his introduction to Madrid's all-star side.
