Carling Cup

Viesti Kirjoittaja tallipoika »

Preview: Wycombe v Wimbledon

Wycombe defender Mark Rogers will be included in the starting line-up against Wimbledon despite suffering from heat-stroke.

The centre-half came off at half-time during the 1-0 opening-day win over Stockport after feeling unwell, but he is expected to return for the Carling Cup clash against manager Lawrie Sanchez's former club.

Sanchez is unlikely to make any changes to a winning side, with Craig Faulconbridge (knee), Keith Ryan (hernia), Jonny Dixon (calf), Gavin Holligan (groin) and Frank Talia (neck) all missing.

Wimbledon manager Stuart Murdoch will add teenage prospect Wade Small to his squad.

Small was promoted from the youth ranks following the loss of several key players over the summer and will start on the bench.

The Dons are still without forwards Jobi McAnuff and Lionel Morgan, who are recovering from injuries. McAnuff is back in training after a foot injury, while Morgan has yet to return from a cartilage operation.

Preview: Torquay v Crystal Palace

Torquay will still be without three key players when they take on Crystal Palace in the Carling Cup first round at Plainmoor.

Reuben Hazell (knee), Tony Bedeau (groin) and Martin Gritton (leg) are ruled out by injury.

Jason Fowler shrugged off a hip injury to play and score in the 1-0 win at Northampton on Saturday.

Torquay's former Palace players, Sean Hankin and David Woozley, could face their old club after being named in the Gulls squad.

Cedric Berthelin is preferred to Matt Clarke in goal for Crystal Palace against Torquay in the Carling Cup.

Clarke conceded two goals in Palace's 3-2 win at Burnley on Saturday and is being eased back in gently after missing most of last season with a knee injury.

Manager Steve Kember has promised to make other changes, but Wayne Routledge and Shaun Derry are in the squad despite being sent off at Turf Moor.

Defender Danny Granville is sidelined after a hernia operation.

Preview: Millwall v Oxford Utd

Paul Ifill will be rested for Millwall's Carling Cup first-round match at home to Oxford United.

The winger suffered a minor leg injury in the Lions' 2-0 opening-day win over Wigan and will not be risked.

Mark McGhee will also add Alan Dunne, Kevin Braniff and Mark Phillips to the squad, but Mark McCammon (knee), Paul Robinson (shin), Richard Sadlier (hip) and David Livermore (cartilage) are out.

Oxford boss Ian Atkins has no fresh injury worries and is likely to name an unchanged side after the opening-day win at Lincoln.

New loan signing Jon Ashton will continue in defence after his impressive debut at Sincil Bank.

Paul McCarthy remains sidelined by an Achilles injury and long-term absentees Jamie Brooks and Lee Steele are still at least a couple of months away from returning.

Atkins could hand Mark Rawle his debut after he had to settle for a place on the bench on Saturday

Preview: Tranmere v Bury

Tranmere manager Ray Mathias is not expected to make many changes to the side which beat Brentford on Saturday when they face Bury in the Carling Cup.

Tyrone Loran was the only first-team regular to be sidelined against the Bees and he will be missing once again with knee ligament damage.

Mathias will also be without injured youngsters Jamie McGuire and Neil Ashton, but the rest of his squad came through Saturday's fixture unscathed.

Alex Hay will be hoping for a start after being left on the bench against Brentford but may struggle to force his way into a side which began the season with a crushing 4-1 win.

Bury player-manager Andy Preece is unlikely to be able to call on Terry Dunfield and Paul O'Shaughnessy.

Dunfield missed the Division Three opener at Swansea with a shoulder injury and is expected to watch from the sidelines at Prenton Park.

O'Shaughnessy, meanwhile, has a knee problem and was also sidelined for the 4-2 defeat at Vetch Field.

Lee Connell staked his claim for a starting place by scoring within 60 seconds of coming off the bench against the Swans.

Preview: Southend v Swindon

Che Wilson is set for his first match of the campaign when Southend welcome Swindon for the first round of the Carling Cup.

Wilson missed the opening-day victory over Cheltenham with a leg injury he sustained in training.

Jamie Stuart is suspended for the second successive game and will also miss Saturday's clash with Doncaster.

Jamie Fullarton has failed to recover from a groin injury in time and will once again be absent.

Swindon boss Andy King is expected to give some of his fringe players a run-out.

Rhys Evans will start in goal with Jon Stevenson likely to begin the match up front.

Andy Gurney is definitely absent after suffering a groin strain in Saturday's 3-2 loss to Sheffield Wednesday.

Grant Smith, Alan Reeves and Andrew Nicholas are also included in the squad.

Preview: Scunthorpe v Oldham Athletic

Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws has no new injury doubts or suspension worries ahead of his side's Carling Cup clash with Oldham.

The Iron entertain Oldham in the first round with Laws able to pick his starting XI from the same squad beaten by Bristol Rovers on the opening day at Glanford Park.

That could mean another start on the bench for new loan signing Steve MacLean from Rangers should Laws stick to the pairing of Steve Torpey and Paul Hayes up front.

Oldham boss Iain Dowie could make a shock return.

Dowie's squad has been decimated by close-season departures and injuries and he is considering including himself after retaining his Football League player's registration.

There could also be a surprise comeback for John Sheridan as Dowie is left with just six fully-fit senior professionals and five youth-team players.

David Eyres (knee), Dean Holden (thigh), David Beherall (knee), Michael Clegg (back), Will Haining (ankle) and Chris Killen (foot) are unavailable.

New loan signing Ndiwa Kangana has been refused permission by Bolton to take part

Preview: Huddersfield v Derby

Huddersfield boss Peter Jackson is hoping to field an unchanged side for the Carling Cup clash at home to Derby.

The Terriers took a point from a 2-2 draw at home to Cambridge on the opening day, with midfielder Tony Carss (toe) the only player to sustain an injury.

But Jackson, boosted by the news that Coventry have given loan signing Lee Fowler permission to play in the first-round clash, expects Carss to be fit.

Derby striker Izale McLeod is a major fitness doubt after he was carried off during the 3-0 defeat by Stoke at Pride Park with an ankle injury.

That leaves manager George Burley short of options in attack.

Youl Mawene's medial knee ligament problems continue to rule him out but Simo Valakari has recovered from a virus.

Warren Barton (back) could also return although defensive colleague Dave Walton (knee) is still struggling

Preview: Lincoln City v Stockport

Two Lincoln players face late fitness tests ahead of the Carling Cup encounter with Stockport at Sincil Bank.

Peter Gain has suffered a groin strain and is a major doubt to make the starting line-up, but Richard Butcher is likely to shake off a thigh injury in time.

Mark Bailey is unlikely to feature until Saturday even though he is well on the road to recovery from a hamstring injury. Meanwhile Dene Cropper (knee and ankle), Ben Sedgemore (groin), Mark Camm (groin) and Richard Liburd (knee) are all expected to return to training within a couple of weeks.

Stockport player-manager Carlton Palmer could name an unchanged side.

Palmer's players began the new league campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Wycombe on Saturday but the County boss is likely to keep faith with his starting XI.

Former Hibs goalkeeper Nick Colgan will be in the line-up again with Lee Jones struggling to overcome a cartilage problem. Captain Aaron Lescott missed out on Saturday with a groin injury and is struggling to be ready in time again

Preview: Barnsley v Blackpool

Barnsley boss Gudjon Thordarson has no new injury or suspension worries ahead of the Carling Cup clash with Blackpool.

All his players come through Saturday's opening-day win over Colchester unscathed.

"Everyone will report ahead of the match and we will be picking the team from the entire squad," assistant boss Ronnie Glavin said.

"It's possible we could make changes, but everyone came through alright after Saturday and we have no new suspensions."

Loan signings Neil Danns and Jonathan Douglas have both been given permission to play for Blackpool.

Steve McMahon's side will be looking to bounce back from their humiliating 5-0 defeat to QPR.

John Murphy, Danny Coid (both thigh) and Keith Southern (knee) are all ruled out.

Preview: Walsall v Carlisle

Walsall defender Ian Roper is doubtful for the Carling Cup clash with Carlisle after sustaining an injury in the win against West Brom.

The 26-year-old sustained a back injury during Saturday's 4-1 victory over the Baggies and has has been rated as touch-and-go for the Bescot Stadium tie.

Midfielder Jamie Lawrence continues to be ruled out of contention after suffering a chipped bone in his foot during a pre-season friendly.

Carlisle manager Roddy Collins is expected to field an unchanged side for the difficult trip.

Des Byrne is the club's only major absentee and he is still a few weeks away from full fitness after suffering ankle ligament damage. However, Brendan McGill, who was expected to miss Saturday's 2-1 defeat by York with a rib problem, made a surprise start against the Minstermen and is fit to play again.

Steve Livingstone, meanwhile, is facing a three-match ban for his red card at the weekend but the suspension for violent conduct will not begin until later in the month.

Preview: Doncaster v Grimsby

Doncaster boss Dave Penney has reported no injury problems ahead of his side's Carling Cup first-round tie with Grimsby.

Penney said: "It will be another step up to play a Second Division club.

"Obviously they were in the First Division last year and we were in the Conference so it will be interesting to see how we do."

Grimsby boss Paul Groves could name loan signing Laurens Ten Heuvel in the starting line-up again but he will still be without John McDermott (calf) and Alan Pouton (knee).

Stacy Coldicott is unlikely to play a part although he is back in light training.

Preview: Northampton v Norwich

Northampton boss Martin Wilkinson has no fresh injuries to contend with ahead of their Carling Cup encounter with Norwich.

Chris Willmott suffered a broken nose in the 1-0 loss to Torquay but is fit enough to take his place in the squad.

The match comes too soon for Steve Morison, Ashley Westwood and Tom Youngs, who are all still recovering from knee problems.

Norwich boss Nigel Worthington has hinted midfielder Phil Mulryne will start.

Mulryne only figured as a substitute in Saturday's draw with Bradford with new signing Damien Francis taking his place in midfield.

Keeper Robert Green and skipper Adam Drury have shrugged off knocks picked up at Valley Parade, but summer signing Jim Brennan is still unlikely to make his competitive debut due to a thigh injury.

Preview: Wigan Athletic v Hull City

Jason De Vos has been ruled out of Wigan's Carling Cup clash at home to Hull.

The Latics defender had a scan on his foot after taking a knock in the opening-day defeat at Millwall and although no bones have been broken, he will sit out the first-round encounter.

Goalkeeper Gary Walsh has been placed on stand-by after first-choice John Filan hurt a finger at The New Den. The Australian stopper has had an X-ray, but there is no lasting damage and he could yet make the starting line-up. Midfielder Mike Flynn has recovered from a thigh injury while star striker Nathan Ellington (knee) is expected to return in a fortnight.

Hull enjoyed an injury-free opening Saturday of the season, but three members of manager Peter Taylor's first-team squad will definitely remain on the sidelines for the trip.

Ryan Williams is not expected to return for at least five weeks due to tonsilitis although it is hoped Andy Dawson (knee) and John Anderson (foot) will be able to start training again within two weeks.

Richard Hinds is ready after he was substituted when feeling unwell in the scorching hot conditions during Saturday's win against Darlington.

Midfielders Stuart Green and Ian Ashbee, who had been carrying injuries in pre-season, are fully fit again after successfully coming through the opening game of the season.

Preview: Bradford v Darlington

Bradford manager Nicky Law is looking to field an unchanged line-up against Darlington in the Carling Cup.

Jason Gavin is back in the squad after a thigh strain and could make his debut after signing in the summer from Middlesbrough.

Wayne Jacobs is also now fully fit after he successfully came through the Norwich match following a knee injury which had kept him out of the final week of pre-season training.

Darlington have no injury problems and Mick Tait's side will hope to cause an upset.

Summer signings Mike Price and Fabian Bossy are pushing to play their part at Valley Parade after not appearing in Saturday's 4-1 thumping by Hull.

Preview: Chesterfield v Burnley

Chesterfield boss Roy McFarland is hoping to name an unchanged line-up for the Carling Cup first round clash against Burnley at Saltergate.

"Getting through to the second round would certainly be very beneficial from a financial point of view, and Roy will hope to put out his strongest possible side," said a club spokesman.

However, the Spireites will still be without Stuart Howson and Mark Innes, who missed the 0-0 draw against Wrexham on Saturday.

Innes is hoping that a trip to Lilleshall will help him recover from an abductor strain, and Howson will be out until the end of August with a knee injury.

Burnley are likely to be unchanged despite losing 3-2 to nine-man Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Ian Moore is suspended for the second of a three-game ban and striker Gareth Taylor is a long-term absentee with an eye injury.

Preview: Preston v Notts County

Preston midfielder Eddie Lewis could be rested for the Carling Cup clash with Notts County.

Though the American scored against West Ham on Saturday, boss Craig Brown could leave him a night off after a busy summer schedule.

Tyrone Mears is likely to be on the bench after recovering from nerve problems but none of Brown's other sidelined stars are expected to return.

Paul McKenna (ankle) is still missing while Lee Briscoe (hamstring), Marlon Broomes (thigh) and striker George Koumantarakis (knee) are also struggling. Jamaican defender Claude Davis has failed to receive a residency permit in time.

Notts County boss Bill Dearden is set to choose from an unchanged squad despite a 5-0 drubbing at Bristol City.

But with just 20 players in the first-team squad, Dearden has few options for shuffling the pack ahead of the trip to Deepdale.

Preview: Crewe v Wrexham

Dean Ashton will return to the Crewe starting line-up for the Carling Cup clash with Wrexham.

Ashton missed Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Wimbledon with a hamstring injury but he came through training successfully and will go straight into the side in place of youngster James Robinson.

On-loan striker Jonathan Walters will not be available for selection as his club Bolton do not want him cup-tied.

Striker Paul Edwards (ankle) and defender Richard Walker (shin) remain on the sidelines.

Wrexham boss Denis Smith expects to name an unchanged line-up.

Defender Steve Roberts (foot) remains the only major absentee as no fresh injuries were picked up in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Chesterfield.

Smith said: "I would think we will go in unchanged. Nothing came out of Saturday's match that would force a change

Preview: Bristol Rovers v Brighton

Bristol Rovers manager Ray Graydon will be forced to plan without Graham Hyde for the second successive match when his side meet Brighton in the Carling Cup.

Hyde has a hamstring strain and missed Saturday's victory over Scunthorpe but could be in contention for this weekend's league encounter with Rochdale.

Wayne Carlisle has a slight Achilles problem but is not expected to be absent, and Graydon is unlikely to make many changes to his line-up.

Darius Henderson will miss the trip for Brighton but aside from that, Steve Coppell will have the same squad he took to Oldham to choose from.

Henderson, who is on loan and scored in the 3-1 win over the Latics on Saturday, has not been given permission to play by Reading.

The match also comes too soon for John Piercy, who is still recovering from a stomach bug.

Preview: Port Vale v Nottingham Forest

Andreas Lipa is set to make his first start for Port Vale when they welcome Nottingham Forest to Vale Park for the first round of the Carling Cup.

Lipa, who missed the last couple of pre-season friendlies through injury, proved his worth during the 2-1 win against Bournemouth on Saturday when he came on for Mark Boyd early in the second half.

Neil Brisco misses his second successive game through suspension, while Dean Delaney again starts in goal in place of Mark Goodlad, who is out of action following an operation on his finger.

Forest have a doubt over Brynjar Gunnarsson.

The Iceland international sustained a dead leg during an impressive debut performance in the 2-0 home win over Sunderland.

Danny Sonner is likely to deputise - like he did against the Black Cats - should Gunnarsson fail to be passed fit.

Preview: Macclesfield v Sheffield United

Macclesfield defender Steve Macauley is fighting to be ready in time for his side's Carling Cup clash at home to Sheffield United.

Macauley missed Saturday's goalless draw with Boston after failing to make a full recovery from knee surgery, but the extra few days of training may allow him to feature at Moss Rose.

However, David Flitcroft is absent for the second game in succession although the meeting with cup specialists United will complete his two-match suspension.

Chris Priest is also out with knee ligament damage, while goalkeeper Boaz Myhill could again get the nod ahead of Steve Wilson, who has been suffering with a back problem.

Mark Rankine is expected to shake off a slight knock. The former Wolves midfielder finished Saturday's draw with Gillingham and will be included in Neil Warnock's squad.

Otherwise Warnock has no new injury or suspension worries, but he is expected to make several changes to his line-up. Striker Steve Kabba (knee) is still at least a month away from a return.

Preview: Rotherham v York City

Rotherham boss Ronnie Moore has revealed he may make changes to his starting line-up for the Carling Cup clash at home to York.

Goalkeeper Mike Pollitt is the only serious doubt for the contest after he picked up a stomach bug, and loan signing Bradley Jones is on standby to take his place.

Andy Monkhouse, Darren Byfield and John Mullin are among those who could be rested following the clash with Cardiff on Saturday.

Christian Fox has been ruled out for York after failing to recover from an ankle injury picked up at Carlisle on Saturday.

The midfielder was substituted after an hour of the 2-1 win and joins Jon Parkin, who is still struggling with a heel problem, on the sidelines.

Summer signing Liam George will also miss out as he is still waiting for international clearance.

Preview: Cheltenham v QPR

Cheltenham boss Bobby Gould has a number of injury concerns going into the Carling Cup encounter with QPR.

Shane Duff has damaged ligaments and tendons in his ankle and will be out for the immediate future.

John Finnigan, who was also carried off during the 2-0 loss to Southend, is rated 50-50 after a heavy kick to the shin left him with deep bruising.

Lee Howells is not expected to feature in the first-round clash as he continues to battle back from an Achilles injury and Steve Book (flu) and Craig Dobson (tonsilitis) are also rated doubtful.

Queens Park Rangers manager Ian Holloway is down to the bare bones as he only has 15 players fit and has two YTS players on stand-by.

Clarke Carlisle has a swollen ankle, Kevin Gallen has a thigh injury and Richard Pacquette is still out with a hamstring problem.

Preview: Luton Town v Yeovil Town

Luton midfielder Ahmet Brkovic is a doubt for the Carling Cup tie with Yeovil Town at Kenilworth Road.

Brkovic was left on the bench for Saturday's win over Rushden but suffered a minor strain after replacing Courtney Pitt with three minutes remaining.

Manager Mike Newell will definitely be without Russell Perrett who is continuing to fight his way back to full fitness after groin surgery.

But young goalkeeper Rob Beckwith will get another chance, with the Hatters unlikely to sign an experienced keeper on loan before the cup fixture.

Yeovil boss Gary Johnson is hoping central defender Colin Pluck will pass a late fitness test.

Pluck was substituted with a back injury during the first half of Yeovil's historic 3-1 league win at Rochdale, when he was replaced by Portuguese centre-back Hugo Rodrigues.

Preview: Cambridge United v Gillingham

Cambridge left-back Freddie Murray is the only new injury worry for manager John Taylor as he prepares for the home encounter with Gillingham in the Carling Cup.

Murray soldiered on for the full 90 minutes at Huddersfield despite sustaining a nasty cut to his head in the first half, but he is now a doubt for the first-round clash.

Taylor is otherwise expected to stick with the side that drew 2-2 at the McAlpine Stadium, with Warren Goodhind still sidelined after recently going under the knife for a knee cartilage operation.

Terry Fleming is ruled out through suspension, as he serves the second match of a three-game ban.

Gillingham are expected to field an unchanged side as injured quartet Rod Wallace (leg), Marlon King, Paul Smith and Kevin James (all knee) are still unavailable.

Summer signings Ian Cox and John Hills are set to start at the Abbey Stadium after impressing on their debuts at the weekend.

Preview: Cardiff v Leyton Orient

Cardiff boss Lennie Lawrence is expected to hand his fringe players a chance to make an impression against Leyton Orient in the Carling Cup first round at Ninian Park.

Poland international defender Thomasz Klos could make his debut providing his recent work permit application is granted.

Martyn Margetson, Josh Collins, Gareth Whalley, Jason Bowen and Leyton Maxwell - substitutes at Rotherham - are expected to start.

However, Peter Thorne (foot), Scott Young (back), Spencer Prior (suspended), Gareth Croft (appendix) and Gavin Gordon (hamstring) are again ruled out.

Matt Joseph and Lee Thorpe could start for Leyton Orient after Achilles and thigh injuries respectively.

Orient boss Paul Brush is still without Donny Barnard (knee) and Greg Heald (hip) but striker Chris Tate and midfielder Ciaran Toner, who had both been struggling with knocks, are both available for selection after coming through the Doncaster game unscathed.

Preview: Watford v Bournemouth

Watford defender Paul Robinson is suspended for the Carling Cup clash with Bournemouth, while Wayne Brown (calf) and Jason Norville (hamstring) are sidelined.

Bournemouth defender Shaun Maher is ruled out after injuring his ankle during training and is set to undergo a scan to determine the full extent of the injury.

Neil Young is also absent with an ankle injury but goalkeeper Gareth Stewart, who has been suffering from a foot injury, is once again expected to start the game on the bench.

The players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect for the 21-year-old Jimmy Davis who was killed in a car crash.

Preview: WBA v Brentford

A question mark hangs over the fitness of West Brom defender Larus Sigurdsson ahead of the Carling Cup clash against Brentford.

Sigurdsson managed to complete just 35 minutes of Saturday's 4-1 Division One defeat at Walsall before a back injury put paid to his participation.

The 30-year-old's injury is currently being assessed but the Icelander is a doubt.

Central defender Thomas Gaardsoe, a close-season signing from Ipswich, has returned to training after recovering from an ankle knock.

Stephen Evans is back in contention for a place in the Brentford side after missing Saturday's disappointing 4-1 defeat at Tranmere with a leg injury.

Manager Wally Downes is looking to create a shock at The Hawthorns and will be able to field a full strength side after everyone came through Saturday's game unscathed.

Preview: Colchester v Plymouth

Colchester forward Dean Morgan is likely to be missing again when Phil Parkinson's side host Plymouth in the first round of the Carling Cup.

Morgan suffered a thigh injury during pre-season and was left out of the squad as the Us began their Division Two campaign with a 1-0 defeat at Barnsley.

The youngster is not expected to be risked against the Pilgrims while fellow striker Wayne Andrews serves the second game of a three-match ban.

Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock is set to make wholesale changes for the clash.

Strikers Michael Evans and Nathan Lowndes and midfielder Steve Adams all came on as substitutes against Grimsby and could be in line for a start.

Central defender Hasney Aljofree and on-loan Birmingham City left-back Peter Gilbert also come into contention.(Ananova)

Walsall-Carlisle

Collins focuses on league form 12 Aug

Carlisle United chief Roddy Collins says he will play a virtual reserve team in the Carling Cup clash at Walsall, as he concentrates on the league already.

Collins is angry with an opening-day 21-home defeat by York City and wants his squad to focus on their Nationwide Division Three campaign.

He told the Newcastle Journal: "We've got this cup game, but I don't see it as being important. I'm not concerned about it all.

"I'd rather just concentrate on getting things right for the Yeovil game at the weekend.

"I can tell the fans planning to travel down that we will be fielding a reserve team because the cup is not our number one priority this season.

"Our priority at the moment is putting right the things we did wrong against York and making sure we do well in the League."
