Man Utd rest key players

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has rested several key players for his team's Champions League match with Deportivo La Coruna.

With United already assured of qualification from their group, Ryan Giggs is one of the few experienced players making the trip.

The likes of David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Fabien Barthez and Rio Ferdinand have all been rested as Ferguson makes sure his key players are fresh for their Premiership challenge.

Scottish Under-21 international Darren Fletcher could make another start after impressing during last week's 1-1 draw with Basle.

Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, John O'Shea and Laurent Blanc are also set to start against Deportivo, who have no chance of qualifying from the group.

Deportivo cannot qualify after their dramatic defeat by Juventus last week.

But coach Javier Irureta is still likely to field a strong side as he looks to maintain momentum for the important Spanish league clash with Real Madrid at the weekend.

Roy Makaay scored his 20th league goal of the season in Saturday's 2-0 league win over Rayo Vallecano and the Dutch international is once again likely to lead the line against United.

The game should mark a return to European action for goalkeeper Jose Molina, who was back in the Deportivo team on Saturday for his first match since he was diagnosed as having testicular cancer in October.

AC Milan v Borussia Dortmund

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti is expected to rest strikers Filippo Inzaghi and Rivaldo for their match against Borussia Dortmund.

The Italians have already qualified for the knockout stages and are expected to start with Andriy Shevchenko playing just in front of Portuguese playmaker Rui Costa.

Fernando Redondo takes the place of regular central midfielder Andrea Pirlo, with Samuele Dalla Bona and Cristian Brocchi on the wings.

Christian Abbiati replaces first team goalkeeper Dida between the posts.

To make the quarter-finals, Borussia Dortmund have to beat AC Milan and hope Real Madrid do not win away to Lokomotiv Moscow.

But Dortmund go into the match without Czech playmaker Tomas Rosicky, who has a thigh injury.

If Dortmund were to go out, Germany would be without a team in the quarter-finals of European club competition for the first time in 19 years.

Lokomotiv Moscow v Real Madrid

Real Madrid go into their game against Lokomotiv Moscow knowing that they need to win to be assured of a place in the quarter-finals.

If Real draw and Borussia Dortmund beat AC Milan in the other Group C match, the defending champions will fail to make the last eight.

Real go into the match without inspirational full back Roberto Carlos, who is suspended.

Argentine winger Santiago Solari injured an ankle in Real's final training session before flying out to Moscow, but the club insist he will be fit for Tuesday and he could be asked to step back and cover for the Brazilian.

French midfielder Claude Makelele was rested for Saturday's 1-0 win away to Villarreal, when a last-minute goal from Ivan Helguera kept the club top of the table.

But Makelele should return to play alongside Flavio Conceicao in the heart of the midfield.

Lokomotiv skipper Dmitry Loskov returns after missing last week's defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Defender Gennady Nizhegorodov, who was also suspended for the Dortmund game, should return too.

Moscow have no chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals but are hopeful of another good result against Real, who they held to a 2-2 draw at the Bernabeu earlier in the group.

Basle v Juventus

Juventus striker Alessandro del Piero is fit again after a thigh injury, but will probably start on the bench for the Italians.

Del Piero has been out since the beginning of February, but is in contention to replace either Marcelo Zalayeta or Marcelo Salas in Juve's attack.

Midfielder Igor Tudor, who scored the last-gasp winner in Juve's 3-2 victory over Deportivo last week, should take the place of the suspended Edgar Davids.

In defence, Lilian Thuram returns to right-back after being rested during Juve's weekend win against Modena.

Juve need only a draw to ensure qualification to the last eight, but Basle need a near miracle.

Christian Gross's side need to win 4-0 or better to have any chance of pipping Juventus.

Gross will name the same side that earned a creditable 1-1 draw at Manchester United last week.

They welcome back Christian Gimenez, Thimothee Atoube, Marco Zwyssig and midfielder Sebastien Barberis after all four sat out Saturday's 4-1 League win over FC Thun.

Midfielders Antonio Esposito and Ivan Ergic are the only absentees due to calf and knee injuries respectively.

Wales international Adrian Williams is doubtful for Reading with a knee ligament injury.

Chris Swailes and striker Darren Byfield are back from suspension for Rotherham's match against Grimsby.

The duo missed Saturday's 1-1 draw with Gillingham at Millmoor after accumulating five yellow cards each.

Marvin Bryan (calf) and Andy Monkhouse (knee) are set to miss out, while defender Rob Scott is still struggling with a shoulder injury.

Grimsby player-manager Paul Groves will be without Alan Pouton for the trip he starts a four-match ban.

Pouton was dismissed for two bookings in the draw with Preston in December and his ban could be further extended pending an FA hearing after he threw his captain's armband at the linesman at Deepdale.

Carlisle will be without Darren Kelly for the basement battle with Macclesfield.

The defender is serving the first game of a two-match suspension and is expected to be replaced by Lee Maddison.

There are doubts over Craig Russell, who is struggling with a thigh injury but Peter Murphy and Paul Raven are expected to be fit despite sustaining minor knocks at the weekend.

Macclesfield manager Dave Moss has a concern over defender Danny Adams.

Jamie McCombe is set for a recall as Scunthorpe entertain Rochdale.

The centre-back missed Saturday's 1-1 draw at Torquay, but has recovered from his knee problem and will be in Brian Laws' squad for the clash at Glanford Park.

Laws has no new injury worries and will otherwise name an unchanged squad.

Rochdale's Wayne Evans underwent a brain scan on Monday and is a major doubt.

The 32-year-old has been complaining of tunnel vision since receiving a blow to the head two weeks ago.

Dale will definitely be without hamstring victims Michael Oliver and Steven Hill, as well as Neil Edwards who is out for the rest of the season with groin, knee and knuckle injuries.

Oxford manager Ian Atkins has a goalkeeper crisis as he prepares for the home clash with Cambridge United.

Andy Woodman was stretchered off after receiving a kick in the face during Saturday's 2-1 win at Shrewsbury and was replaced by defender Scott McNiven.

The other main keeper at the Kassam Stadium, Ian McCaldon, is still some way off returning after a thigh strain, leaving youth-team shot-stopper Simon Cox as the Us' only fit number one.

Steve Basham is expected to return from a dead leg.

Cambridge boss John Taylor is forced to make at least one change from the team beaten by Kidderminster on Saturday following on-loan Tom Newey's return to Leeds.

Taylor will welcome back Adam Tann, who has completed a three-match suspension, but Andy Duncan is unlikely to feature because of a groin problem.

Steve Roberts is almost certain to miss Wrexham's home game against Hartlepool after aggravating a long-standing heel injury.

The defender was substituted at half-time in the Dragons' draw against Lincoln on Saturday, and the problem will now be reassessed.

Paul Edwards also came off in the closing stages after suffering a recurrence of an ankle injury, but it is hoped he will recover to play.

The game comes too soon for Stephen Thomas (hamstring), but he may be back in contention for the weekend visit of York.

Hartlepool boss Mike Newell has no fresh injury worries ahead of the trip to the Racecourse Ground.
