US PGA Golf: Wells Fargo Championship.....Rory Sabbatini

Rory is a very talented golfer who is a six time winner on Tour , two of which have come in May and this is the time of year we usually see him at his best and there have been clear signs that he is going to win again over the last 12 months or so. This guy has issues, is not very popular and as the saying goes, he could start an argument in an empty room !

A big finish at the Sony this year and he also went well at the Honda Classic in early March, three rounds there in the mid/high 60's along with a poor R2 score saw him finish 11th, a 70 on the Friday ( which would still have been higher than he scored in the other three rounds) would have seen him win the tournament . So , again, we can see this is a golfer close to getting it all together. He missed his next four cuts, but narrowly in the last two and he went deep on the Mini Verde Bermuda grass Sawgrass course last week, in the Players Championship, shooting a fine 70-71-69-69 on an ultra tough layout for a T6 finish. Four things about that, he looked in a good place mentally and was even dancing on the green after a birdie at one hole, he holds his form well once he has found it and this is his time of year, he also hit the magical 70% of fairways which he was doing earlier in the season when posting high finishes ( 60% average through his previous two starts) and he played well on those Mini Verde greens and that, above all, looks key.

The greens here were rebuilt ahead of last year's event, the contours were changed and all relaid with that same Mini Verde Bermuda grass, replacing bentgrass, Rory liked the changes and played as well as anyone over the final three days after a slow start on Thursday and finished in a share of 8th , shooting 67 on Sunday, when he birdied all four Par 5's. Playing those well will be vital this week and he was an eyecatching -6 on the 5's at Sawgrass, he clearly likes Mini Verde , is in form and has positive mental memories of playing well here since the changes and that is hugely important for anyone, but especially Sabbatini, he looks sure to go well and tends to post a high finish anytime he makes the cut and that seems very likely this week.
