Mersulle siirtynyt Bottas on tainnut pelkästään ajaa 250 kierrosta 1,5 päivässä.
FERRARI
Maanantai:
The Ferrari looking OK. Vettel seems to have a level of grip that is similar to Hamilton. So that's promising for Ferrari, as the car certainly wasn't running out of grip. Still early days but from what we are seeing right now, which is only a few laps at Turn 3, Ferrari could be on a position to give Mercedes a bit of a fight.
This is looking like a very solid start to pre season for Ferrari. Vettel has been right at the sharp end of the time sheet on mediums and has just completed a proper practice start in the pitlane with an hour left to run today. That's something we've gotten used to seeing Mercedes doing in recent seasons, but Ferrari must be making good progress already with its new car to be focusing on details like this already.
Tiistai:
Quite impressed by the Ferrari under braking so far. Vettel looked good yesterday and Raikkonen has looked quick and comfortable (when he's been trying) heading into Turn 1.
The Ferrari looks extremely poised on track - very well balanced and stable. Just to the eye it's a clear step from last year.
Kimi carrying great speed in Turn 9 without any problem - front and rear both giving the grip it seems.
I spent a lot of Bottas's race run watching from trackside, and it looked...messy. He had quite a bit of understeer early on when the car was heavy, and it was moving around on him in the corners. The contrast with watching Raikkonen in the Ferrari was huge, although of course Ferrari has been working on a different programme this afternoon. But the car was doing everything Raikkonen would want, and he can attack the apex really well.
Keskiviikko:
Watching Vettel through Turn 1-3 is definitely my 'wow' factor of the day. The Ferrari is just planted and, even on used tyres, it doesn't budge one millimetre off line.
That's a good lap from Vettel, given he's on softs. The Ferrari looks like it should be capable of that kind of pace given how good its balance and grip seems to be. On softs, 1m19.9s compared to other people is very good. And looking at Hamilton, his best lap on a race run is a 1m25.0s, so that would put him at about 1m20.0s in terms of pace attacking on soft tyres. So that's positive. If Vettel can do it right in the Ferrari, he could do a 1m19.3s on the ultra-soft. So we're still on target to get laps under 1m19s because these runs aren't being done on the sniff of an oily rag in terms of fuel.
Watching this morning, the Ferrari looked planted at every corner I went to. The Mercedes when doing quick runs on new tyres also looked pretty good, but when on longer runs or on softer tyres looked a bit fidgety and was moving around a bit. The Mercedes seems to have more understeer than the Ferrari, because it seems to show more front wheel on turn in because of the extra steering lock. So it looks like Ferrari has a better front end, which bodes very well for when it runs the new tyres, because you need a good front end to get the lap time.
I know the Mercedes has broken into the 1m19s bracket on super-softs, but watching at the fast Turn 9 right-hander the Ferrari doing 1m21s on mediums still looks the most impressive car to me. It just looks so stable and consistent.
Mario Andretti used to say that the ground effect Lotus 79 was painted to the ground. Well, exiting Turn 2 and into Turn 3, where I am watching, both the Mercedes and the Ferrari look like they are painted to the ground. But, to me, Ferrari has used a better undercoat. It really does look good and super consistent.
MERCEDES
Tiistai:
Magnussen using DRS on back straight. Bottas isn't. The Mercedes seems to be quite sensitive at the rear to the bumps into Turn 9.
Bottas able to rotate the rear of the Mercedes as he wants into the corner before the chicane, very controllable and sign of a responsive and usable car. Able to attack the corner but not over rotate. He's a bit more circumspect next time round as needs to bear in mind tyre life.
Big lift for Bottas through Turn 9, so the Mercedes is not flat through there in 'race trim'
Keskiviikko:
As Hamilton's race stints progressed, Turn 3 has becoming increasingly like a hairpin for the Mercedes. He's having to take bigger and bigger lifts to get it to bite on turn-in.
RED BULL
Maanantai:
I had the chance to have a quick look at the Red Bull before it returned to the pits on the back of a truck and disappeared into the garage. There's nothing that jumps out about the RB13 and makes me think 'wow that's going to be hard to beat'. But what really matters is going to be its performance, which we haven't been given an indication of yet.
Tiistai:
Verstappen trying to commit lots of entry speed into Turn 4, but the Red Bull is not compliant and he gets a kick of oversteer as he tries to blast out the other side.
Rear of the Red Bull a bit skittish on the power through the last corner. Verstappen getting it turned into the chicane very well though.
Keskiviikko:
The Red Bull is a deceiving car to watch. It has done a decent enough lap time today but because of the docile sound of the Renault it doesn’t seem so quick and it's harder to pick up when it's on a quick lap. But it looks stable. There were a couple of wobbles through Turn 2 getting the power back down on the way up to Turn 3, probably more wobbles than most others, but Ricciardo was pushing on quite hard.
Watching trackside this morning, I don't think the Renault engine is running to its full potential. In all three cars - the Red Bull, Toro Rosso and the works Renault - it sounds a bit quieter and calmer than the other engines - even the Honda. It might just be a characteristic of the engine, but I don't see what that would be as revs still make noise. That suggests there is some more to come from those teams, even just in the power unit department.
Yleisesti
I've just spent a bit of time standing by the pitlane exit where the drivers do their practice starts and you can get a good look at the cars. Of the top three teams, the Red Bull is the most basic car. There's nothing trick on there and it's all smooth surfaces so I expect there will be parts to come there. If I was writing a development list for the big teams, I would say Mercedes needs to concentrate on the bargeboard area, as although it has a sophisticated arrangement it hasn't fully exploited what is possible. For Ferrari, the focus would be on the diffuser. For Red Bull, it would be both areas.
Katsellaan myöhemmin lisää vetoja, kunhan kohdetarjontaan tulee jotain muutakin kuin mestaruusvedot.
Verstappen vakuuttaa mielestäni paljon enemmän kuin Ricciardo. Raja aika hatusta heitetty mutta mutulla maistuu kyllä
