Southampton v Tottenham
Its been a pretty good week for Southampton. They progressed to the quarter finals of the cup midweek with a 3-1 away win at Brentford and still have their remarkable home record intact - despite their lowly position, they have gone eleven games without a defeat at St Marys, and have only lost twice all season. They will also be boosted by the impressive 1-1 draw with Arsenal last week, and the scoring of striker Peter Crouch, who has scored eight goals in his last ten games in all competitions. The Saints will be disappointed however, that midfielder David Prutton has been banned for ten matches for being sent off and pushing the referee at Brentford.
Tottenham will also be confident after their win at Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup midweek, but will be worried about their recent away form in the league, where they lost 3-1 to Bolton and 3-0 to lowly Crystal Palace. There is also talk of Spurs coach Martin Jol joining Ajax as their new manager.
This should be a pretty tight game - Spurs are good going forward but do tend to concede away from home, while Southampton have a solid home record without actually winning many games! For me, I think it is time for Southampton to add another home win to the two they have already. The Saints have been slowly improving under Harry Redknapp, and i feel its only a matter of time before they start winning. After beating Liverpool and holding Arsenal last week, I think they will have too much fight for Spurs today.
Southampton also have strikers in form - Kevin Phillips returned for injury and was on the scoresheet midweek, while Henri Camara is also very dangerous - he has scored three goals in the last three home games, and of course there is Crouch. I do not underestimate Spurs as they are a good side, but their recent away form has been disappointing, and I think at nice odds of 6/4 the Saints are a great bet today.
