Champions League matches, first legs

Rosenborg - Maccabi Haifa
Time for Champions League football again, and as always, the Norwegian side Rosenborg are in form again. After a poor start to their domestic season Rosenborg are top of the Norwegian league and last Sunday they played some tremendous football in the top encounter against Lilleström (4-1). Season best! In other words, Rosenborg should definitely defeat Maccabi Haifa, and the price on the Norwegian home win is 1.67. The multi talented Biruk will not play for Haifa, but Giovanni Rosso will lead his side once again. Rosenborg seldom fail against the likes of Maccabi Haifa. I sit here year in and year out and talk about the Rosenborg experience out in Europe, and how they always take part of the group play of the Champions League. So too this time! Home win. (1.67)

Red Star - PSV
Red Star are my winners at home to PSV Eindhoven, and the price on the home win is 2.50. Great price! Hiddink still leads his PSV, a PSV side no longer associated with Kezman and Robben. A certain Russian billionaire has bought these two footballers, and their new address is Stamford Bridge (Chelsea). Cocu has joined PSV from Barcelona, and he has travelled to Belgrade, but he is very much a doubtful starter. Vonlathen stayed put in Holland, but new boys Beasley and Farfar are included in the squad. Red Star were 0-2 down away to Young Boys, and not only that, they were only 10 men on the pitch. Still they recovered and managed a 2-2 draw, and in the return leg they were easy winners. Always a menacing force in theitr home matches, Red Star, and I absolutely back the home win tomorrow. (2.50)

Shaktar Donetsk - FC Brugge
Shaktar Donetsk have played 4 matches in the Ukrainian league, and they have won them all. They have some interesting players in their squad - the Czech Hubschmann, the Croats, Srna and Pletikosa, as well as Baptista. Their opponents tomorrow, FC Brugge, defeated the Bulgarian side, Plovdiv, with ease in the previous round. Van der Heyden and Spilar should both be fit for this match. Look out for Balaban, once for A Villa, who scored 4 goals against the Bulgarians. Over the two legs I do not know, but in Ukraine I expect Shaktar to win, and the price on the home win is 2.20!

Wisla Krakow - Real Madrid
Wisla Krakow, Polish champions, 3 of the last 4 years, face Real Madrid tomorrow. Wisla have started their domestic campaign excellently by winning the first two matches 5-1 and 4-0. Zurawski scored a hat trick in the previous round of the Champions League, and he will start up front alongside Frankowski. Real come with the usual campaigners - Ronaldo and Raul - Figo, Beckham, Zidane and Guti (Helguera) and Roberto Carlos plus new boy Samuel in defence of course. The prices in this game are 5.00 - 1.80. As the Spanish season has not started yet, and the fact that Real probably are convinced that they will have an easy win at the Bernabeu Stadium in two weeks time, yes, the big price naturally, makes me be so bold to suggest a home win! (5.00)

Basel - Inter
Italian sides often struggle at this time of the season, and Inter could have problems away to Basle. The price on the Swiss home win is 3.50. Inter travel to Switzerland without Vieri, Cannavaro and van der Meyde. Adraino and Recoba should start up front, and the new midfielders, Davids, Cambiasso and Veron could all start. Basle have played 3 matches in the Swiss league, and they are unbeaten (of course). Basle have lost Atouba to Tottenham, and they rely on the South Americans Rossi and Gimenez up front once again. Another Italian side, Juventus, only managed a 2-2 draw with the Swedish side Djurgården, and I suggest that Inter will have problems in Basle. So, the home win! (3.50)

Dynamo Bucharest - Man United
Manchester United travel to Romania without van Nistelrooy and Saha, meaning that Alan Smith and Forlan should form the strike force. Ronaldo is also absent, no good of course, but the United team looks OK on paper. One could have doubts however about their form at this stage of the season, and they did not impress against Arsenal the other day. Still you got the feeling that coach Ferguson did not care that much about the Charity Shield final. Bucharest miss their suspended goal keeper Muntenau. Golden rule: Beware of Romanian teams in their home matches! At this stage of the season United are not to be trusted, and as the prices are a bit lop sided (5.00 - 1.80) you have to take a chance with the home win for Dynamo Bucharest. (5.00)

Bramble Blow For Crisis-Hit Newcastle
By Matthew Jones - August 11 2004

Newcastle United defender Titus Bramble has been sent for a scan on an injured hamstring according to reports. Robson now has a defensive crisis ahead of Saturday's derby with Middlesbrough at the Riverside as they open this season's Premiership account.

Andy O'Brien is still out of action with conjunctivitus and Jonathan Woodgate is still isn't fully fit. Bramble will almost certainly miss the game.

Stephen Carr is expected to start the game at right-back, free-ing Aaron Hughes to play in the middle. But who will partner him?

Elliot? How often have Hughes and Elliot player together, and how often have they played in the center? Robbie Elliott has not played a first team game for 19 months now.

Could Robson bring in a loan CB?
