Bournemouth v Cardiff 25/10/04
Bournemouth manager Sean O'Driscoll is set to keep faith with the same squad that won at Oldham on Saturday for the visit of Cardiff in the Carling Cup Third Round.

O'Driscoll was forced to tinker with his formation at Boundary Park after left-back Warren Cummings sustained an ankle injury at Torquay last Tuesday.

But despite a number of players playing out of position, the Cherries came from a goal behind to make it four wins out of four and extend their unbeaten run to seven games.

Cummings, Dani Rodrigues (hamstring) and Jason Tindall (knee) are all sidelined for the Bluebirds' visit while Stephen Purches may also struggle to make the 16 as he bids to shake off an ongoing ankle problem.

The third round clash at the Fitness First Stadium was Bournemouth's reward for knocking out Blackburn on penalties at Ewood Park last month.

Goalkeeper Neill Alexander will start a game for the first time since Christmas when the Bluebirds travel to Dean Court.

The Scottish stopper had slipped behind Tony Warner and Martyn Margetson, but the latter's knee and back injuries has seen Alexander handed a place on the substitute's bench recently.

Now with manager Lennie Lawrence resting Warner, Alexander will be part of a team showing many changes from the one which drew 2-2 at Millwall.

All five substitutes at the New Den, Alexander, defenders Rhys Weston and Josh Collins, midfielder Lee Bullock plus striker Cameron Jerome, will start against Bournemouth, while teenage defender Byron Anthony could also be involved.

Midfielder Willie Boland (ankle) and wideman Paul Parry (back) are rated at only 50-50 to play while loanees Gary O'Neil and Darren Williams are not eligible for the Dean Court clash.

Besides Margetson, the Bluebirds are also still without Robert Page (ribs), midfielder Richard Langley (knee), full back Gary Croft (knee) plus strikers Andy Campbell (calf) and Stuart Fleetwood (knee).

Doncaster v Nottm Forest

Doncaster boss Dave Penney welcomes back James Coppinger, who has recovered from a virus, but five other players are all ruled out.
Neil Roberts is cup-tied, Ricky Ravenhill is suspended, Mark Albrighton and Steve Foster have knee injuries, and Simon Marples has a thigh strain.

Nottingham Forest's Gareth Taylor is suspended as is Paul Evans but Andy Impey returns after completing a ban.

Jon-Olav Hjelde (calf) and Andy Reid (knee) are both out injured.

Doncaster v Nottm Forest 25/10/04
Doncaster manager Dave Penney is hopeful of collecting another Championship scalp as they take on Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup third round.

Goals from Ricky Ravenhill and Jermaine McSporran accounted for Ipswich in the previous round and Penney believes the Earth Stadium crowd could inspire another upset.

He said: "This will be another tough test but we've got quite a good record at home and if we get a big crowd behind us who knows what could happen."

James Coppinger is back in contention after a virus but Penney will be without five other players.

Neil Roberts is cup-tied after turning out for Wigan in an earlier round and Ravenhill is suspended. Meanwhile Mark Albrighton and Steve Foster are still sidelined through knee injuries, while Simon Marples has picked up a thigh strain.

Nottingham Forest striker Gareth Taylor has been ruled out of the trip to The Earth Stadium through suspension.

Taylor, who has already served one suspension this season after he was sent off in the 4-1 home defeat to Coventry in August, will miss the Belle Vue encounter with Rovers after his dismissal during the 3-2 weekend loss at Preston triggered a four-game ban.

Central midfielder Paul Evans will also miss out after picking up a one-game suspension thanks to an accumulation of five bookings but Andy Impey returns to availability after having served a one-match ban of his own.

Defender Jon-Olav Hjelde is also expected to be absent after falling victim to a calf injury while midfield playmaker Andy Reid has been ruled out by a knee injury.
.............
Portsmouth v Leeds

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp will call on some of his reserves, with Jamie Ashdown expected to take over from Shaka Hislop in goal.
Richard Hughes, Aliou Cisse, Eyal Berkovic and Matt Taylor are all set to feature, while captain Arjan de Zeeuw could make a comeback from injury.

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp will rest some of his Premiership stars for the Carling Cup third round clash at home to Leeds.

Shaka Hislop, goalkeeping hero of Sunday's 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough, top scorer Aiyegbeni Yakubu, midfielders Patrik Berger and Nigel Quashie and defender Dejan Stefanovic are among those likely to be left out.
Paul Butler and Matthew Kilgallon are suspended, so Leeds have recalled on-loan pair Andy Keogh and Simon Johnson

Jermaine Wright (Achilles) and Stephen Crainey (groin) are both out.
.................
Sheff Utd v Watford

Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock has hinted that Jack Lester could start as Danny Cadamarteri is cup-tied.
Derek Geary is out for the same reason, with Alan Wright set to join Alan Quinn and Simon Francis on the sidelines.

Watford will be without defender Neil Cox, who sustained a hamstring injury in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Ipswich.

Cox is likely to be replaced by Jay Demerit in the centre of defence, but Paul Devlin and Brynjar Gunnarsson are still unavailable through injury.
.............
Burnley v Aston Villa

Burnley boss Steve Cotterill will replace defender Frank Sinclair, who is suspended, with either Lee Roche or Richard Duffy.
Striker Ian Moore needs surgery on a knee injury and will not play.

Aston Villa look set to give Carlton Cole an extended run alongside Juan Pablo Angel in attack after Darius Vassell broke his ankle against Fulham.

Centre-back Liam Ridgewell is pushing for a start but David O'Leary is likely to field his strongest side.

But O'Leary is likely to field a near full-strength side and his small squad gives him little option to rest players.
...............
Millwall v Liverpool

Millwall will be without striker Barry Hayles, who is cup-tied having already played for Sheffield United in the competition this season.
So Neil Harris could be handed a place in the starting line-up alongside on-loan Southampton forward Jo Tessem.

Liverpool's young reserves Neil Mellor, Zak Whitbread and Darren Potter will be given a chance to show their ability.

But senior stars Sami Hyypia, Luis Garcia, Xabi Alonso, Djibril Cisse and Dietmar Hamann will all be rested.
.....
Crewe v Man Utd

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to stick to his policy of fielding a mix of reserves and youngsters in the Carling Cup.
Darren Fletcher, David Bellion and Kieron Richardson have been guaranteed a start and Ferguson could also recall goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Crewe striker Dean Ashton should return after recovering from an ankle injury.

Ben Williams should retain his place in goal but Adie Moses (thigh) and Michael Higdon (broken foot) miss out.

Man Utd provisional squad: Howard, Ricardo, Spector, Brown, Pique, McShane, O'Shea, Jones, Eagles, Kleberson, Djemba-Djemba, Miller, Richardson, Fletcher, Bellion, Saha, Smith, Rossi, Ebanks-Blake.
.......
Bolton v Tottenham

Bolton striker Les Ferdinand looks set to face his former club while ex-Spain and Real Madrid star Fernando Hierro could start.
Portuguese striker Ricardo Vaz Te might also get a run-out after scoring twice for the reserves on Monday.

Tootenham team news will appear here.
........
Charlton v Crystal Palace

Charlton defender Radostin Kishishev is again a doubt with the groin problem which has forced him to miss the last two matches.
Defender Mark Fish (knee) is another likely absentee, but striker Francis Jeffers could start after brief outings following a neck injury.

Crystal Palace team news will appear here.
......
Man City v Arsenal

Manchester City manager Kevin Keegan could be without strikers Nicolas Anelka (groin) and Jon Macken (back), who were injured against Newcastle.
Keegan could be forced to play Shaun Wright-Phillips, or the England midfielder's brother Bradley, in attack alongside Robbie Fowler.

Arsenal team news will appear here.
.....
Newcastle v Norwich

Norwich look set to be without defender Simon Charlton (foot) and striker Leon McKenzie (thigh).
Utility man Gary Doherty, Thomas Helveg or youngster Jason Shackell could come in at centre-half while Mathias Svensson is set to start in attack.

11) Hertha Berlin - Borussia Dortmund

Hertha:
12 Fiedler - 22 O. Schröder, 3 A. Friedrich, 4 van Burik, 29 Fathi - 8 Dardai - 37 Chr. Müller, 7 Bastürk, 10 Marcelinho, 11 Gilberto - 13 Bobic

Dortmund:

Bayern without Ballack, Kuffour, Rau, Santa Cruz and Deisler.
Wolfsburg without Hristov.

VfL Wolfsburg
1 Jentzsch - 2 Rytter, 18 Quiroga, 29 Hofland, 7 Weiser - 27 Karhan, 6 Thiam - 10 D'Alessandro - 13 Brdaric, 9 Klimowicz, 21 M. Petrov

Bayern München
1 Kahn - 2 Sagnol, 3 Lucio, 25 T. Linke, 20 Salihamidzic - 8 Frings, 23 Hargreaves, 31 Schweinsteiger, 11 Zé Roberto - 10 Makaay, 14 Pizarro

13) Hannover 96 - Kaiserslautern

Ballack still missing as Bayern host leaders Wolfsburg
Mon 25 October, 2004 16:44

BERLIN, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich are likely to be without playmaker Michael Ballack once again when they face Bundesliga leaders VfL Wolfsburg on Tuesday.

Ballack, Germany's captain, sustained an ankle injury in Bayern's Champions League defeat by Juventus last week and missed training on Monday.

"The doctor said that Michael is not yet ready," Bayern coach Felix Magath said.

Brazilians Lucio and Ze Roberto should be back, however, after missing Bayern's 2-0 win at Hansa Rostock on Saturday, while Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro is fit after three weeks out with a back injury.

Midfielder Sebastian Deisler has also returned to training after being readmitted last week to the clinic that treated him for depression last year. It is unclear when he will be ready to play again.

Wolfsburg, who have only beaten Bayern once in 14 matches, will be at full strength following the return from suspension of Dutch defender Kevin Hofland.

Wolfsburg are the surprise league leaders after nine matches, four points ahead of third-placed Bayern.

Second-placed VfB Stuttgart face champions Werder Bremen, in fourth, on Wednesday.

Stuttgart's unbeaten run ended on Sunday with a 2-0 loss to SC Freiburg. They had gone into the match as league leaders, having not conceded a goal in over eight hours.

Stuttgart's Austrian defender Martin Stranzl is suspended after being sent off on Sunday. Werder have no obvious injury worries.

Neutrals will want to see a repeat of last year's corresponding fixture, which ended in a 4-4 draw.

Fiorentina sack manager
From correspondents in Florence
October 26, 2004

FIORENTNA have sacked manager Emiliano Mondonico after the newly-promoted side's poor start to the season.

It comes just months atfer he was hailed as a hero for returning them to the top flight.

The decision comes the day after the 2-2 draw away to Udinese which leaves them near the relegation zone with seven points from seven games.

Mondonico will be replaced on a caretaker basis by goalkeepers' coach Sergio Buso.

While Buso has been put in temporary charge and will be in the dugout for Thursday's (Australina time) game with with Reggina, names bandied around for the job on a permanent basis include former Italy handler Dino Zoff, Turkish coach Fatih Terim and former Valencia and Inter Milan boss Hector Cuper.

Reggina - Fiorentina

Stadio Granillo

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fiorentina are forced to start again after Emiliano Mondonico’s resignation, but their form was just beginning to turn around. The Viola had not scored on their travels before the 2-2 draw at Udinese this weekend, although they are too reliant on Fabrizio Miccoli to score – as he has netted three out of the total four goals this season.

While the club searches for a new tactician, Sergio Buso will act as caretaker manager for this trip to the Stadio Granillo. Sebastian Cejas and Christian Riganò are still sidelined, but the new man in charge could give Javier Portillo a rare start in place of the so far ineffective Hidetoshi Nakata.

Reggina would love to see the Japanese international start in a media-friendly clash with their own Shunsuke Nakamura. Paredes comes into midfield to replace the suspended Mozart, but it’ll be tough going for Fiorentina, as the Amaranto have a strong home record.

Reggina (probable): Pavarini; Franceschini, Cannarsa, Zamboni; Mesto, Tedesco, Paredes, Colucci, Balestri; Nakamura, Bonazzoli

Fiorentina (probable): Lupatelli; Ujfalusi, Viali, Dainelli, Chiellini; Ariatti, Obodo, Maresca; Jorgensen; Portillo, Miccoli
.......

Bologna - Udinese

These two sides are hovering between mid-table safety and the danger zone, so a victory could be vital for their ambitions.

Bologna had a good run of results, in particular their 3-1 hammering of Roma, but away defeats at Palermo and Livorno have highlighted their poor record outside the Stadio Dall’Ara. Giacomo Cipriani and Igli Tare are battling for the lone centre-forward spot, while the midfield is short on creativity with Mourad Meghni, Federico Giunti and Carlo Nervo out injured.

Udinese’s 2-2 draw with Fiorentina at the weekend gave them a confidence boost after suffering three consecutive defeats. Nestor Sensini returned from a five-month absence and immediately scored a decisive goal, but the defence needs to be shored up and fast. David Pizarro and Vincenzo Iaquinta should be fit enough to start now, although the striker has competition from Dino Fava and David Di Michele.

Bologna (probable): Pagliuca, Juarez, Petruzzi, Torrisi, Sussi; Loviso; Binotto, Amoroso, Locatelli, Bellucci; Cipriani

Udinese (probable): De Sanctis; Bertotto, Sensini, Kroldrup; Mauri, Pinzi, Pizarro, Muntari, Jankulovski; Fava, Di Michele
....
Brescia-Siena

Brescia seem to be surrounded by controversy wherever they go at the moment, while Siena are increasingly desperate for points.

The Rondinelle have already picked up two highly debatable victories this season, when Mannini’s goal doomed Udinese despite goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis lying on the ground needing treatment, while this weekend they saw off Sampdoria with an extremely dubious penalty.

Zoboli was sent off during that match and is therefore suspended, adding to Gianni De Biasi’s worries as Daniele Adani, Markus Schopp and Jonathan Bachini are also out. Youngster Simone Dallamano steps in to defence, while Andrea Caracciolo returns from his ban to partner Giuseppe Sculli.

Siena caused Juventus several problems before finally succumbing 3-0 on Saturday evening, further highlighting their lack of scoring prowess. While Enrico Chiesa continues to struggle for form, the Tuscans have netted just three goals in seven games, failing to score in five of them. Mattia Graffiedi should retain his spot ahead of Tore Andre Flo, while Gianluca Falsini is out injured.

Brescia (probable): Castellazzi; Martinez, Di Biagio, Mareco, Dallamano; Almeyda, Guana, Domizzi, Mannini; Sculli, Caracciolo

Siena (probable): Fortin; Cirillo, Portanova, Argilli, Nicola; Camorani, Pecchia, Di Donato, Vergassola; Graffiedi, Chiesa
...........
Cagliari - Parma

This will be an emotional moment for Gianfranco Zola, who comes face to face with his former club. The legendary figure spent three and a half glorious years at the Stadio Tardini before moving to Chelsea in January 1996. He returned to the peninsula for his hometown club and is now taking them to an impressive Serie A campaign.

Cagliari’s unbeaten home record lasted 18 months before Milan’s 1-0 victory here, but they are eager to pick up that form again. David Suazo’s return from injury has at last reformed the trident attack that terrorised Serie B last season, and the impact showed in their 2-2 draw away to Atalanta at the weekend. There are some changes, as Daniele Conti comes into midfield for the suspended Massimo Brambilla.

Parma finally grabbed their first win of the season by crushing Lazio 3-1 and hope to take that confidence and run with it in Sardinia. Alberto Gilardino and Domenico Morfeo are beginning to hit form, while Marco Marchionni scored a wonderful overhead kick. However, the pressure is still on Coach Silvio Baldini to deliver, as the Gialloblu still hover above the relegation zone.

Cagliari (probable): Katergiannakis; Lopez, Bega, Maltagliati, Agostini; Abeijon, Conti, Gobbi; Esposito, Zola, Suazo

Parma (probable): Frey; Bonera, Cannavaro, Contini, Potenza; Simplicio, Grella; Marchionni, Morfeo, Bresciano; Gilardino

Juventus - Roma

There are grudge matches in Italian football, and then there is Juventus-Roma. After a fiery summer in which Fabio Capello, Emerson and Jonathan Zebina moved to the auld enemy, how will troubled Roma react?

The rivalry between these two sides has always been intense, but stepped up a few notches in recent years with controversial decisions and long-running transfer battles adding fuel to the fire. The shock of the summer saw Capello sign for the Turin giants, seemingly without the knowledge of Roma, after the club had released him from his contract.

Emerson then engaged in a tug-of-war to join the Coach and Zebina at the Delle Alpi, rejecting more lucrative moves to Real Madrid, Chelsea and Inter along the way. He isn’t the only one, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic was also heavily linked to the Giallorossi last year before eventually plumping for Juventus.

This should also be an entertaining encounter between two of the three teams who have scored in every single game so far this season, the other being Lecce. It will take a great Roma performance to break through this defence, as Juve have conceded just two goals so far, but if anyone can do it then it’s Francesco Totti, Vincenzo Montella and Antonio Cassano.

The young talent has now been allowed back into full training and looks set to make his comeback against the club that this week confirmed its interest in discussing terms for a summer switch. Christian Panucci could still be left out after turning up late for training, while Cristian Chivu, Vincent Candela and Ivan Pelizzoli are injured. Manuele Blasi should recover from a thigh problem to start in the Juve midfield.

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Blasi, Nedved; Del Piero, Ibrahimovic

Roma (probable): Zotti; Sartor, Ferrari, Mexes, Cufre; Mancini, Perrotta, Dacourt; Totti, Cassano; Montella
............

Lazio - Messina

Both these sides must recover from heavy defeats at the weekend, as the pressure builds on Lazio boss Mimmo Caso. The Biancocelesti are yet to win a single Serie A game at the Stadio Olimpico and were humiliated 3-1 away to Parma on Sunday.

Simone Inzaghi, Fabio Liverani, Cesar and Angelo Peruzzi are still struggling with injuries, so Tommaso Rocchi should retain his place despite needing four stitches for a head wound. Paolo Di Canio is likely to return to the starting eleven, perhaps pushing out the ineffective Christian Manfredini.

Messina were unbeaten on home turf in League games since 2002, but Lecce trumped them 4-1 at the weekend. That game was also notable for the horrific injury to Domenico Giampà, who required 200 stitches for a gaping wound to his thigh and will be out for between two and four months. Andre Zoro is also out suspended, while Fusco and Rafael are injured, so Iliev steps in to that midfield role behind Riccardo Zampagna and Arturo Di Napoli.

Lazio (probable): Sereni; Oddo, Siviglia, Couto, Lopez; A Filippini, Dabo, Giannichedda; Di Canio, Rocchi; Muzzi

Messina (probable): Storari; Conte, Zanchi, Rezaei, Parisi; Sullo, Coppola, Donati, Iliev; Zampagna, Di Napoli
..........
Lecce - Inter

Two of the most prolific sides in Serie A right now face off in what is set to be an enthralling encounter.

Zdenek Zeman and Roberto Mancini are two prophets of attacking football at all costs and it shows in the statistics. Lecce have scored 18 and conceded nine, while Inter have bagged 14 and let in 11 goals, the Milan derby being their first clean sheet.

Nicolas Burdisso and Alvaro Recoba are still out of action, but we could see Ze Maria and Andy Van der Meyde come in for Javier Zanetti and Emre Belozoglu. Lecce are without the suspended Rullo, so Lorenzo Stovini takes his place in defence, with Alex Pinardi ready to come back after injury. Zeman’s men have won all three of their home games this season while Inter are unbeaten, so something has to give.

Lecce (probable): Sicignano; Cassetti, Diamoutene, Stovini, Abruzzese; Giacomazzi, Ledesma, Dalla Bona; Pinardi, Bjelanovic, Vucinic

Inter (probable): Fontana; Ze Maria, Cordoba, Materazzi, Favalli; Veron, Cambiasso, Stankovic, van der Meyde; Vieri, Adriano

Palermo - Livorno

Palermo’s confidence is high after they held Roma to a home draw, but Livorno are also shooting for the stars following their first win of the season.

These two newly promoted sides have had a very different start to the campaign, as the Sicilians have made a name for themselves as giant-killers, while the Tuscans struggle to match the form that took them to Serie A.

Francesco Guidolin is dealing with an injury crisis, as Lamberto Zauli, Mario Alberto Santana, Kewullay Conteh and Pietro Accardi are all out of action. Franco Brienza should again support lone centre-forward Luca Toni, while Gonzalez fills in that midfield slot.

Livorno are relying heavily on Cristiano Lucarelli to score their goals, but the whole team continues to waste too many chances and it’ll take more than one win to get the pressure off Coach Franco Colomba.

Palermo (probable): Guardalben; Zaccardo, Biava, Barzagli, Grosso; Mutarelli, Corini, Barone, Gonzalez; Brienza; Toni

Livorno (probable): Amelia; Grandoni, Vargas, Melara; Balleri, Vidigal, Passoni, Ruotolo, Giallombardo; C Lucarelli, Protti
