Read talks on 'fixing' claims

BOOKMAKER Mark Read met yesterday with stewards for discussions about allegations he made in the media last month of nationwide race-fixing, doping and betting market manipulation.
Read, the executive chairman of Northern Territory-based firm International All Sports, and his chief executive Robert Edge met in Melbourne with Racing Victoria's director of integrity services, Des Gleeson, his deputy Terry Sharp and Thoroughbred Racing South Australia's chief steward, Graham Loch.
Gleeson and Loch would not comment on the specifics of the discussions.
"All I am prepared to say is that there was a fruitful exchange of ideas and information," Loch said.
"I'm certain that there will be a continuing benefit to both parties. A lot of initiatives discussed are already being investigated and measures put in place at the chairmen of stewards' conference in some cases."
Stewards called on Read to meet for an in-camera discussion after he alleged last month that some races in Australia were being fixed. Gleeson wrote to Read outlining his concerns with the allegations made and asked him to "please explain".
RACING Victoria is keen to support moves by Victoria Police to ban as many as 80 people, alleged to have criminal backgrounds, from major gambling arenas including racecourses. Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon already has a black list of 12 people barred from Melbourne's Crown Casino.
