MADRID, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Real Madrid are anxious to avoid the mistake they made in their previous Champions League meeting with Juventus when the two heavyweights go head-to-head again at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium on Tuesday.

Real's hopes of winning a 10th European crown ended two seasons ago when the Italians scored a crucial away goal as they went down 2-1 in the first leg of a semi-final in Madrid and then finished off the job with an efficient 3-1 win in Turin.

"The key thing is not to concede any goals at home this time," centre back Ivan Helguera told Marca newspaper before the last 16 knockout tie against the Italians.

"Even if we win just 1-0 that will do because then they will have to push forward in Turin and we can catch them out with our speedy forwards like Ronaldo."

After a miserable start to the season, a seven-match winning streak in the league under new coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo went a long way to restoring Real's shattered morale.

Although the run came to an end at the weekend when they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at home to Athletic Bilbao, Real can take some comfort from the fact that they were missing suspended full back Roberto Carlos and that Ronaldo, Raul and Zinedine Zidane were rested for most of the game.

"Despite Saturday's defeat we are in much better shape and working far harder now," Zidane told sports daily AS on Monday. "Luxemburgo has taken control of the team and knows what he wants and that's important."

The former Juventus player also believes that if Real can get past the Serie A side they will be able to go all the way and claim a trophy they have come to see as their own.

"This is a very, very important game because if we beat Juve we will do something really big in the Champions League this time. If we can beat them over two legs we can beat anyone."

If right back Michel Salgado recovers from a bruised thigh, Real will be at full strength for Tuesday's game.

Ronaldo is set to reclaim his place up front at the expense of Michael Owen, who was unable to add to his prolific scoring record during Saturday's defeat.

Juve's season appears to have been a mirror-image of Real's.

The Italians, who are managed by former Real boss Fabio Capello, looked bullet-proof at the start of the campaign, but have suffered a worrying dip in form this month that has seen them fritter away an eight-point lead at the top of the table.

A 0-0 dull draw at lowly Messina on Saturday opened the door to title rivals AC Milan to now lead the standings on goal difference.

Capello has tried to shrug off his side's indifferent performance.

"We were unlucky," he said. "We created at least six good chances, but we weren't able to turn those into goals."

"It's just one of those times. The ball just doesn't want to go in the net, but I remain calm because physically we're in good shape."

His confidence will have been dented, however, after the team's best striker David Trezeguet was forced to withdraw from the 20-man squad after succumbing to 'flu.

His probable replacement, Alessandro Del Piero, gave a lively performance against Messina, but is a shadow of the player who played such a decisive role the last time Juve met Real.

The other star of that match, Pavel Nedved, is also expected to figure in the game, though what kind of form he is in remains uncertain.

The former European Player of the Year has not played a competitive match since suffering a knee injury against Brescia on January 23.

Plymouth v Sheff Utd: Preview

Defender Mathias Doumbe will miss Plymouth's match against Sheffield United following his dismissal at West Ham on Saturday.

Doumbe is banned after receiving a straight red card for bringing down Nigel Reo-Coker and conceding the penalty from which Teddy Sheringham scored the Hammers' final goal in their 5-0 win.

However, Argyle will be boosted by the return from suspension of skipper Paul Wotton, who can play in central defence or midfield.

Midfielder Lee Hodges (back) remains an injury doubt and was not included in the squad at Upton Park.

Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock will recall Rob Kozluk to his squad for the trip.

The 27-year-old defender has recently returned from a loan spell at Preston and could be named among the substitutes.

All Warnock's players came through unscathed after holding Arsenal at Highbury in the fifth round of the FA Cup, but he could be tempted to make changes.

Sunderland v Rotherham: Preview

Mick McCarthy has strongly hinted he will select an unchanged line-up for the third game running when Sunderland face Rotherham, despite a disappointing defeat at the hands of Brighton.

"It's always tempting to change things after a defeat but is it the right way? I picked what I thought was my best team at Brighton and that doesn't change just because we've lost one game," McCarthy told the club's official website.

McCarthy was impressed with the performances of substitutes Sean Thornton and Chris Brown but is unlikely to hand them starting places. Thornton will miss Saturday's game against Cardiff through suspension.

"Sean got booked stupidly for diving and he will miss Saturday's game through suspension," McCarthy added. "So do I upset the applecart for just one game? Perhaps not, but it's one to think about."

Snow covers are in place on the Stadium of Light pitch and access routes to the ground will be cleared in a bid to ensure the game goes ahead despite the bitter north east weather.

Rotherham manager Alan Knill will select from an unchanged squad.

Rob Scott is back in full training following his recent shoulder injury, but the game is likely to come too soon for him.

Martin McIntosh is the only other confirmed absentee, with Paul Warne available.

The experienced striker has not featured since the 1-1 draw with Crewe on January 22.

Ipswich striker James Scowcroft will definitely be available for the home clash with Watford.

The striker, on loan from Leicester until the end of the season, was booked in Friday's 1-1 draw at Preston, which marked his second debut for the club.

The yellow card he collected at Deepdale was his fifth of the season - he already had four against his name with the Foxes - and that means he is due to serve a one-game suspension.

After a weekend of confusion, Ipswich secretary Sally Webb explained: "James will definitely be available for the Watford game."

Ipswich are still hoping to have the caution rescinded, after match referee Matt Messias agreed to take a look at the incident on video.

Ipswich have named an unchanged squad, with skipper Jim Magilton due to start after being a substitute at Preston. Kevin Horlock or Darren Currie will make way. Leading scorer Shefki Kuqi misses out again through injury, while Jason De Vos and Ian Westlake trained on Monday after recovering from knocks.

Goalkeeper Richard Lee is due to make his first start for more than two months for Watford.

Lee has been out of action since fracturing a cheekbone in the defeat at Coventry on December 18, but has now recovered and should start, especially as on-loan keeper Paul Jones has returned to Wolves.

Johnnie Jackson is likely to keep his place in central midfield after agreeing to remain with the Hornets for a third month on loan from Tottenham.

Tony Thorpe is unlikely to recover from a hamstring problem in time for QPR's home clash with Wolves.

The 30-year-old striker sustained the injury in the goalless draw at Millwall nine days ago, and the visit of Glenn Hoddle's men is likely to come too soon for him.

But QPR manager Ian Holloway has no other selection worries, with winger Gareth Ainsworth available despite missing the last two days' training with hamstring trouble.

Skipper Paul Ince is expected to return to the Wolves starting line-up.

Midfielder Ince missed Saturday's 2-2 draw with Gillingham at Molineux as he served a one-game suspension.

Almost certain to miss out in London are Mark Kennedy, who is carrying an Achilles tendon injury, and full-back Mark Clyde, who has fallen victim to a knee problem.

Veteran defender Martin Keown is a doubt for Reading.

Rebrov's place would probably go to Nigel Reo-Coker as the Hammers aim to register a third consecutive Championship win for the first time this season.

Liverpool will be under-strength for the first leg of their Champions League tie on Tuesday versus Bayer Leverkusen.

Skipper Steven Gerrard is suspended and Fernando Morientes and Mauricio Pellegrino are both cup tied.

Harry Kewell is likely to return after recovering from an Achilles injury, but there is also a doubt over Neil Mellor who has a knee injury.

Leverkusen will be without hugely influential defender Jens Nowotny after he sustained a knee ligament injury.

Bayern's Michael Ballack has failed to overcome a thigh injury and misses out.

The midfielder missed his side's 5-0 win over Borussia Dortmund at the weekend because of a thigh muscle strain which he is still struggling to shake it off.

Hiddink has been given a triple injury boost the recovery of Johann Vogel (back), John de Jong (ankle) and Phillip Cocu (illness). Mark van Bommel is still a doubt despite sitting out of Saturday’s 4-1 win against NEC Nijmegen. Brazilian striker Robert, who was signed in January, is yet to play much of a part at PSV but could be thrown in at the deep end and partner Jan Venegoor of Hesselink, who is in a rich vein of form with seven goals in five games.

On the other hand Deschamps has three injury concerns with Sebastien Squillaci struggling with an ankle injury. Diego Perez and Javier Chevanton are both also doubtful. Monaco go into the match on the back of a hard fought draw with French league leaders Lyon, which preserved their unbeaten record that spans from November.
