Serie A team-new's + picks

Chievo - Juventus

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Juventus made a spectacular start to their Serie A season but Chievo will prove their first real test at the Stadio Bentegodi.

The Scudetto holders demolished Empoli 5-1 in Turin for their debut, although the final score flattered Marcello Lippi’s men following an even first half. The Coach will be forced to do without Fabrizio Miccoli for a couple of weeks as the ‘pocket striker’ underwent an emergency appendectomy just hours after leaving the field in that game.

Juve will probably revert back to the more balanced system with Mauro Camoranesi on the right and Pavel Nedved behind front two Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet. Edgar Davids may again be left out as the stalemate over contracts continues.

Chievo drew 1-1 at Brescia in their seasonal debut and showed some difficulty in creating scoring opportunities. The departure of top stars such as Luciano, Eugenio Corini, Massimo Marazzina and Oliver Bierhoff over the summer has left a gap, but Coach Gigi Del Neri has always excelled in finding talent around Italy’s smaller sides.

Giuseppe Sculli has finally ended his goal drought with a brace in the Under-21 squad’s 8-1 destruction of Wales and will again partner Federico Cossato upfront.

Chievo (probable): Marchegiani; Moro, Sala, D’Anna, Lanna; Santana, Perrotta, Baronio, Franceschini; Cossato, Sculli
Juventus (probable): Buffon; Thuram, Legrottaglie, Montero, Zambrotta; Tacchinardi, Appiah, Camoranesi; Nedved; Del Piero, Trezeguet

Siena - Inter
----------
Inter struggled to get the better of Modena in their seasonal debut and must improve on that performance to take anything from new boys Siena. It took 87 minutes for the Nerazzurri to break through and earn a 2-0 win at the San Siro, so the pressure is back on Hector Cuper to liven up his attacking options.

Kily Gonzalez may be tipped for a start in place of the disappointing Luciano, while Alvaro Recoba’s fine form for Uruguay midweek boosts his chances of partnering Christian Vieri upfront. Cuper could instead stick with teenager Obafemi Martins, his blistering pace well suited to counter-attacking football away from home.

Siena will be celebrating their first ever home game in Serie A and already made their mark on the first division thanks to a creditable 2-2 draw at Perugia.

Brazilian midfielder Rodrigo Taddei scored a great volley in that game and should now be fit enough to start behind partners Tore Andre Flo and Enrico Chiesa. Coach Giuseppe Papadopulo believes in attacking football and will certainly not sit back and wait for Inter. We could even see a curious scenario if Nicola Ventola steps off the bench to face his former teammates.

Siena (probable): Rossi; Cirillo, Delli Carri, Mignani, Cufre’; Guigou, D’Aversa, Ardito; Chiesa, Taddei; Flo

Inter (probable): Toldo; J Zanetti, Cannavaro, Materazzi, Cordoba; Van der Meyde, C Zanetti, Emre, Kily; Vieri, Martins

Roma - Brescia
------------
Roma have started the season better than even they expected thanks to a 2-1 victory at Udine, but now welcome tricky customers Brescia to the Stadio Olimpico.

Having finished in eighth place last year the pressure was on the Giallorossi to perform. The chaos over Cristian Chivu’s transfer and on-going problems between Vincenzo Montella and Coach Fabio Capello threatened to destabilise the team ahead of their debut, but they delivered with a win.

Capello must reshuffle his side, introducing Damiano Tommasi for the suspended Olivier Dacourt and again fielding Marco Delvecchio and Antonio Cassano while they await the return to full fitness of Francesco Totti. We may see new signing John Carew on the bench for the first home game of the campaign.

Brescia had a difficult start to the season, drawing 1-1 on home turf with Chievo, but aim to frustrate the Capital club. Pippo Maniero has always proven his worth in Serie A and was tipped to be Roma’s new striker this summer, but opted for first team football with the Rondinelle instead.

Coach Gianni De Biasi has good memories of the Stadio Olimpico, as his Modena came away with a controversial 2-1 victory here last season. He is forced to do without the injured Jonathan Bachini, Giuseppe Colucci and Angelo Pisano, but Gigi Di Biagio is ready for his Serie A debut with a Brescia shirt. Roberto Baggio may also be fit enough to sit on the bench.

Roma (probable): Pelizzoli; Panucci, Zebina, Samuel, Candela; Mancini, Tommasi, Emerson, Lima; Delvecchio, Cassano

Brescia (probable): Castellazzi; Martinez, Petruzzi, Dainelli; Filippini, Brighi, Di Biagio, Matuzalem, Mauri; Schopp, Maniero

Parma - Perugia
--------
We should see goals galore between two teams who both gathered 2-2 draws in their opening encounters.

Parma are ever more reliant on giant hitman Adriano since the departure of ‘goal twin’ Adrian Mutu to Chelsea. The Brazilian scored both strikes at Bologna’s Stadio Dall’Ara to earn a point and hit the woodwork, so he will once again be the man to watch.

It is possible that Coach Cesare Prandelli will give Under-21 international Alberto Gilardino a run out following his four goals in the 8-1 demolition of Wales.

Perugia are preparing for their first UEFA Cup tie in 24 years, but must also concentrate on Serie A to avoid being sucked into the relegation battle so early into the season.

Their home debut could only garner a point against new boys Siena, highlighting a few defensive frailties. A star was born in ex-Arsenal youth product Jay Bothroyd, a tall and powerful figure to match Adriano, after he netted a splendid solo effort during that 2-2 draw. Libyan curiosity Al-Saadi Gheddafi remains sidelined following problems with his international transfer.

Parma (probable): Frey; Bonera, Ferrari, Castellini, Seric; Barone, Blasi; Nakata, Morfeo, Bresciano; Adriano

Perugia (probable): Kalac; Alioui, Di Loreto, Diamoutene; Ze Maria, Tedesco, Obodo, Fusani, Grosso; Bothroyd, Vryzas

Modena - Udinese
----------
Both these teams started their campaigns with a defeat they barely deserved and there will be a bubbling desire for revenge.

Modena held out at the San Siro for 87 minutes before Inter finally broke the deadlock through Christian Vieri for a 2-0 win. The Canarini showed weaknesses upfront, even though their tactics will be considerably more offensive on home turf.

Alberto Malesani is sticking with his favoured 3-4-3 system, even if strikers Carlo Taldo and Nicola Amoruso have both been ruled out with injuries. Fabio Vignaroli takes the centre-forward role instead.

Udinese were unfortunate to be beaten 2-1 at home by Roma in their opening match. Valerio Bertotto saw red in that encounter and will be suspended, so Tomas Manfredini steps in to defence. Vincenzo Iaquinta will start in the centre-forward role with support from creative duo Marek Jankulovski and Martin Jorgensen.

Modena (probable): Ballotta; Mayer, Cevoli, Ungari; Campedelli, Milanetto, Marasco, Balestri; Allegretti, Corrent; Vignaroli

Udinese (probable): De Sanctis; Manfredini, Sensini, Kroldrup; Alberto, Pinzi, Pizarro, Pieri; Jankulovski, Jorgensen; Iaquinta

Lecce - Ancona
---------
The relegation dogfight starts here with two newly promoted sides facing off at the Stadio Via del Mare.

Lecce based most of their promotion run in this very Stadium and will prove a tough test for any travelling teams. The 4-1 defeat at Lazio in Week 1 was a game of two halves, highlighting their potential after the break with youngsters Javier Ernesto Chevanton and Axel Konan.

If they can improve on their finishing and maintain concentration from the start, the smart bet would be on a home win for the Puglia outfit.

Ancona were also defeated in their opening game, submitting to European Champions Milan on their home turf. New Coach Leonardo Menichini has created an organised side that seemed curiously uninspired when going forward, often leaving ex-Piacenza hitman Dario Hubner isolated upfront. Drazen Bolic steps in for the suspended Fabio Bilica, who saw red last week for a scuffle with Paolo Maldini.

Lecce (probable): Amelia; Siviglia, Stovini, Silvestri; Cassetti, Giacomazzi, Piangerelli, Budel, Tonetto; Chevanton, Vucinic

Ancona (probable): Scarpi; Bolic, Viali, Milanese; Daino, Berretta, Andersson, Maini, Sussi; Di Francesco, Hubner

Empoli - Reggina
Razak är borta hos hemmalaget.
Reggina byter målvakt. Lejsal får spela i stället för småskadade Emanuele Belardi.
Dessutom får man tillbaka Emiliano Bonazzoli från avstängning.
------------
Empoli need a result to boost morale following their demolition in Turin, while Reggina must finally prove themselves a team that can travel.

The Tuscans were whipped 5-1 by Juventus in Week 1, although the scoreline did flatter the Scudetto holders. Antonio Di Natale netted their consolation strike and remains the focal point of all attacking moves. Tommaso Rocchi and Francesco Tavano can also prove dangerous on the break.

Reggina must ask questions of their campaign during this trip to Empoli. Last season their away form was simply appalling and Coach Franco Colomba must turn that trend around right from the start. Concentration is an issue, as in their debut a 2-0 lead was thrown away in the second half for Sampdoria to capture a 2-2 draw.

Last year’s top scorer Emiliano Bonazzoli returns from a one-match ban to make his debut, while goalkeeper Lejsal is tipped to step in for Emanuele Belardi.

Empoli (probable): Bucci; Belleri, Cribari, Lucchini, Cupi; Grella, Giampieretti; Busce’, Tavano, Di Natale; Rocchi

Reggina (probable): Lejsal; Jiranek, Sottil, Franceschini; Falsini, Baiocco, Paredes, Mozart; Cozza, Di Michele; Bonazzoli

Milan-Bologna

Milan make their San Siro debut for this season and won’t be pleased to see Bologna boss Carlo Mazzone.

Last season it was his Brescia’s 0-0 draw here that sparked a stuttering series of results, ultimately costing Milan their Scudetto ambitions. Carlo Ancelotti admitted, "I am more afraid of taking on Ancona and Brescia than I am Porto or Real Madrid" because the European Champions find it difficult to break down the smaller sides.

Pippo Inzaghi is on fine form following his Italy hat-trick – the first man since Paolo Rossi in 1982 to achieve such a feat – but question marks still remain on how he will combine with Andriy Shevchenko.

Manuel Rui Costa returns to the starting eleven, although Brazilian prodigy Kaka’ will probably make an appearance. Ancelotti’s most difficult problem right now is picking a back four, as Paolo Maldini is suspended following his uncharacteristic red card, while Kakha Kaladze and Giuseppe Pancaro are struggling with injuries. Martin Laursen and Billy Costacurta are therefore rushed back from their own fitness worries to start in a makeshift defence.

There are reports the Coach is planning a new 4-2-3-1 system with the Brazilian flair of Kaka, Rivaldo and Serginho together behind lone striker Shevchenko. This would also enable Inzaghi to be rested ahead of the Champions’ League opener with Ajax.

Despite only taking the position three days before the start of this campaign, Mazzone managed to earn a creditable 2-2 draw with Parma in his debut encounter with a performance that showed promise for the long-suffering Rossoblu fans. Tomas Locatelli netted as a substitute in that game, but has now recovered from fitness worries for a probable start.

Milan (probable): Dida; Cafu, Nesta, Laursen, Costacurta; Gattuso, Pirlo, Serginho; Rui Costa; Shevchenko, Inzaghi

Bologna (probable): Pagliuca; Zaccardo, Natali, Juarez, Moretti; Guly, Nervo, Locatelli, Bellucci; Signori, Rossini

Sampdoria-Lazio

The stage could not have been more artfully set for Sampdoria’s first home Serie A game in four years against the most important man in their club history.

Roberto Mancini was quite simply a legend in the Stadio Ferraris, also commonly known as Marassi, after lifting the Scudetto, Cup Winners’ Cup, Coppa Italia and reaching the European Cup Final.

Many believed he would return to Genoa one day as a Coach or even President, a scenario the former creative midfielder has not ruled out, but on Saturday Mancio steps in to the Stadium as an opponent with high-flying Lazio.

As if the history leading up to this encounter was not enough to guarantee fireworks, we can expect a hatful of goals between two of the most attacking sides in Serie A. In Week 1 they netted a combined six strikes and Samp fought back from 2-0 down to earn a point at Reggio Calabria. Like Mancini, Walter Novellino is also a fan of the 4-4-2 system and we should see crosses raining down into the box on both ends of the field.

Sampdoria may drop the disappointing Massimo Marazzina in favour of their Serie B partnership of Fabio Bazzani and Francesco Flachi, especially as it was only when these two were reunited that the Blucerchiati kicked into gear against Reggina.

Japanese international Atsushi Yanagisawa again looks set for the bench. Lazio welcome back Jaap Stam from injury to shore up the back four, but all eyes are on Demetrio Albertini’s rediscovered form in the centre.

Sampdoria (probable): Antonioli; Diana, Falcone, Grandoni, Domizzi; Donati, Volpi, Palombo, Doni; Marazzina, Bazzani

Lazio (probable): Peruzzi; Oddo, Stam, Mihajlovic, Favalli; Fiore, Albertini, Stankovic, Cesar; Corradi, Lopez (svenska spel, channel 4)
